Main Purpose of the Job

The Safety Officer will provide both technical and administrative support to the Safety Department. The goal is to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the Safety Management System (SMS) for both the Air Operator Certificate (AOC) and the Approved Maintenance Organization (AMO) at AMREF Flying Doctors.

This role requires regular interaction with both the Flight Operations Unit and the Maintenance Department and reports directly to the Head of Safety.


Key Responsibilities

The ideal candidate will be expected to perform the following duties:

  • Manage and update all safety records.
  • Oversee and update the electronic Safety Management System (eSMS).
  • Maintain the safety database, ensuring data accuracy and completeness.
  • Document all safety-related activities as per the SMS Manual.
  • Promote and embed a strong safety culture across the organization.
  • Assist in the development and rollout of safety promotion activities.
  • Coordinate safety and emergency response plan (ERP) drills and exercises.
  • Investigate and follow up on hazards and occurrence reports.
  • Assist in planning and executing the Safety Review Board and internal safety meetings.
  • Develop and distribute safety bulletins, newsflashes, and newsletters.
  • Perform hazard identification and operational risk assessments.
  • Submit incident and accident reports to the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA).
  • Conduct gap analyses as required by the SMS programme.
  • Analyze safety data for trends and insights.
  • Develop and maintain training materials; support in delivering safety and ERP training.
  • Keep training records updated.
  • Design and revise the Management of Change (MOC) documentation.
  • Maintain and track safety performance targets.
  • Perform any other work-related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • A minimum of three years’ consecutive experience in the aviation industry, specifically in safety and/or quality roles.
  • A technical qualification in flight operations or aircraft maintenance.
  • Completed Safety Management System (SMS) training from a recognized institution.
  • Quality Management System (QMS) training is an added advantage.
  • Proficient in ICT tools relevant to safety management.
  • Familiarity with Kenya Civil Aviation Regulations (KCARs).

  • Ability to multi-task and remain flexible in a 24-hour operational environment.
  • Ability to accurately follow instructions and maintain high-quality documentation.

Work Environment

  • This role operates in a 24-hour working environment.
  • Based at the AMREF Flying Doctors Hangar at Wilson Airport, Nairobi.
