CIFOR Hiring Scientist Genebank CUrator

by Recal

The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and World Agroforestry (ICRAF) are leading global research institutions focused on building evidence and solutions to address some of today’s most pressing environmental and livelihood challenges. From drylands to tropical forests, CIFOR-ICRAF envisions a world where landscapes are sustainable, trees enhance biodiversity, and people enjoy equitable and resilient livelihoods.

With a combined legacy of over 65 years, CIFOR and ICRAF leverage multidisciplinary approaches and deep-rooted partnerships to ensure that trees and forests contribute meaningfully to solving issues of food insecurity, biodiversity loss, climate change, and poverty. Both institutions are part of CGIAR, a global research partnership for a food-secure future.

As part of their continued commitment to conservation science and environmental sustainability, CIFOR-ICRAF is currently hiring for the following position:

Overview of the Role

Within the Trees Theme, the Genetic Resources Unit plays a vital role in conserving and distributing tree genetic resources and germplasm essential for research and development activities. The Unit manages a Genebank comprising over 195 tree species stored as seed collections and 85 species maintained in field genebanks across Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

  • Investigate germination performance, vigour variability, and dormancy-breaking techniques.
  • Develop and improve methods for seed pre-germination treatments.

Genebank Operations & Quality Management

  • Manage and maintain the conservation of agroforestry tree collections in line with international standards and CGIAR Genebank Performance Targets.
  • Implement and monitor Quality Management Systems (QMS) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure technical and legal compliance.

  • Lead preparation of donor reports and institutional genetic resource reporting (e.g., FAO-Treaty, CGIAR-IA).
  • Develop scientific outputs for publication in high-impact journals and presentations for conferences, seminars, and workshops.
  • Ensure regular updates of the Genetic Resources Unit’s web page with current tree species and conservation information.

Capacity Building & Supervision

  • Supervise the Genebank’s workflows across the seed testing laboratory, database, and germplasm health units to enhance staff productivity.
  • Mentor and guide interns and research fellows affiliated with the Genebank.

Networking & Representation

Education, Knowledge, and Experience Requirements

  • Master’s Degree (MSc) in Seed Science, Seed Technology, or Conservation. A Bachelor’s degree in Botany or Taxonomy is preferred.
  • Minimum five years’ experience in a Genebank or active seed testing laboratory, with at least two years in a leadership role.
  • Proven record of peer-reviewed publications in seed science or conservation.
