The Department of Medicine at AKU, Nairobi, is seeking to recruit a qualified and experienced Fulltime Faculty in Neurology. Key Responsibilities
As Fulltime Faculty in Neurology, the successful candidate will operate under the supervision of the Department Chair or a delegated authority. The incumbent will be actively involved in clinical, educational, and academic duties within the Department of Medicine.
Clinical Duties:
- Provide Neurology liaison inpatient services as needed within the hospital setting.
- Manage patients in the Neurology outpatient clinics, offering consultations, diagnosis, and treatment.
- Provide on-call services as scheduled, ensuring 24/7 patient care coverage.
- Order diagnostic tests, including imaging and lab work, to aid in patient diagnosis and management.
- Collaborate with sub-specialists across various disciplines to ensure holistic and comprehensive patient care.
Educational & Supervisory Duties:
- Engage in teaching and supervision of medical residents, Senior House Officers (SHOs), and other clinical staff.
- Facilitate training sessions, case discussions, and clinical teaching in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Mentor junior medical staff, encouraging best practices and continued medical education.
Policy and Research Participation:
- Contribute to the development and review of departmental clinical policies and procedures to promote best practice and standardization of care.
- Participate in clinical research activities, including case writing, journal clubs, and knowledge dissemination within the field of neurology.
Patient Engagement and Advocacy:
- Educate patients on treatment options, informed consent, and the importance of wellness and preventive care.
- Emphasize early detection and interventions that improve patient outcomes.
- Foster an ethical, respectful, and compassionate care environment.
Requirements
Applicants must demonstrate professional competency, ethical standards, and the ability to contribute positively to a high-performance healthcare setting.
Candidates must:
- Have completed a Master of Medicine (MMed) or its equivalent in Neurology.
- Hold a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) or an equivalent medical degree.
- Possess at least one year of post-specialization experience in clinical neurology.
- Be registered with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) as a specialist.
- Have valid and up-to-date certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
- Demonstrate proficiency and confidence in the use of clinical equipment across diverse hospital settings.
- Exhibit excellent communication and interpersonal skills suitable for a teaching hospital environment.
