Brief Description

The External Communications Manager is responsible for designing, developing, and implementing communication programmes, media events, and thought leadership to promote and sell Kenya Airways’ (KQ) brand. The manager translates the leadership team’s executive presence, image, and narrative while combining apipeline of strategic storytelling and contributing to and evaluating our communication and brand strategies in the market lace.

The position works closely with external stakeholders and media and is the focal point of internal teams to communicate the organisation’s message, increase awareness and understanding of KQ’s purpose, and ensure the overall continuity of the organisation’s corporate brand consistency and image.

The role works closely with the organization’s leadership to influence leadership position within our industry.

Detailed Description

  • To lead, manage and deliver an external communications work programme, including media relations, PR, corporate publications and events.
  • Design and implement communication campaigns built on thought leadership, industry developments and market-led initiatives.
  • Proactively identify and recommend opportunistic communications that support organisation and leader strategies/goals, monitoring and leveraging daily organisation and news
  • Work closely with internal stakeholders and spokes people to drive positive, innovative, and impactful communication campaigns from start to finish to enhance KQ’s reputation.
  • To develop and maintain strong stakeholder relationships with key business areas and to provide external communications advice and support services.
  • To plan, manage and deliver a range of high-quality corporate communications projects, campaigns and activities to agreed time scales and budgets, including:
  • Proactive and reactive media enquiries, media releases and statements, briefings and building relationships with journalists, media advice and interview support, and crisis communications.
  • To manage the procurement of and relationships with creative agencies and suppliers.
  • To assist with crisis, reputation management, and business continuity.
  • Manage and coach junior team members

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline. (public relations, journalism, communication, or marketing).
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressive relevant experience in a communications, marketing or journalistic role. 
  • Demonstrated expertise in public relations and release of information for publication
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism
  • Membership/Certification – Relevant PR bodies
