The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) is a global leader in livestock research for sustainable development. Headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, ILRI works to improve food security and reduce poverty through research that enhances livestock productivity and sustainability, particularly in developing countries. ILRI is part of the CGIAR, a global research partnership for a food-secure future.
ILRI is currently seeking highly motivated professionals and graduate-level researchers to join its dynamic teams in various roles ranging from data systems to genetics, field evaluation, and capacity development. If you are passionate about advancing livestock research and making a tangible impact on livelihoods and ecosystems, consider applying for one of the following exciting opportunities:
1. MSc Graduate Fellow – Field Evaluation of Rhodes Grass (Chloris gayana)
Location: Nairobi, Kenya
Job Description:
This fellowship is part of ILRI’s efforts to evaluate and improve forage species for enhanced livestock productivity. The successful fellow will conduct a detailed field evaluation of Rhodes grass germplasm for biomass yield, water-use efficiency, and feed quality traits under varying agro-ecological conditions. Responsibilities include establishing field trials, collecting agronomic and nutritional data, analyzing performance metrics, and preparing research reports. The work aims to identify climate-resilient forage options for smallholder systems in East Africa.
2. MSc Graduate Fellow – Genetic Diversity and Subsetting of Andropogon gayanus and Cynodon spp Collections
Location: Nairobi, Kenya
Job Description:
This graduate fellowship offers an opportunity to explore the genetic variability of key tropical forage species within ILRI’s forage genebank. The fellow will use molecular and morphological tools to assess the genetic diversity of Andropogon gayanus and Cynodon species, develop core subsets, and support breeding or conservation programs. Tasks include laboratory analysis, data curation, bioinformatics analysis, and contribution to publications. The output will enhance resource use in forage improvement programs across Africa.
3. Research Officer – Data Systems (CGIAR Standing Panel on Impact Assessment – SPIA)
Location: Nairobi, Kenya
Job Description:
The Research Officer will support SPIA’s data-driven impact assessment activities under CGIAR. This role involves working with diverse datasets to help measure the reach and effectiveness of agricultural innovations in low- and middle-income countries. The officer will develop and manage integrated data systems, facilitate survey and field data collection processes, and perform data quality assurance. Additional responsibilities include supporting the development of dashboards, metadata documentation, and coordination with national statistics agencies and CGIAR research centers. The goal is to strengthen evidence-based policy and investment decisions across global food systems.
4. Research Associate – Data Systems (Livestock Genetics, Nutrition and Feed Resources)
Location: Nairobi, Kenya
Job Description:
This role supports the Livestock Genetics, Nutrition, and Feed Resources Program in managing and analyzing large datasets generated from laboratory, genomic, and field trials. The Research Associate will be responsible for database development, automation of data pipelines, quality control, and integration of data from multiple research platforms. The successful candidate will work closely with geneticists, nutritionists, and modelers to ensure that data systems are efficient, secure, and accessible. Your work will directly contribute to improved livestock productivity, breeding strategies, and nutritional interventions in smallholder systems.
