The Medical Officer will offer quality health care to all patients in the hospital and work closely as the team leader with nurses, staff in lab, pharmacy and health post to ensure all services are offered. 

Key Responsibilities

Program Management

  • Ensure all patients are attended to daily in the hospital.
  • Ensure the hospital is running effectively in all the wards
  • Attend to all emergencies, both medical and surgical.
  • Manage and supervise all the staff in respective wards.
  • Ensure proper documentation of patient care in patient files.
  • Conduct daily ward rounds in respective wards, i.e. maternity, adult, pediatrics, stabilization center and isolation wards.
  • Quality control by verifying case management is as per protocol/guidelines.
  • Ensuring that department needs are documented and submitted to the MOIC for budgeting
  • Providing weekly updates of the ward status, trends and needs including mitigation measures where surges are forecasted.
  • Performance management of the department by setting department level targets, implementing activities to meet targets.
  • Managing and escalating any issues that arise from the departments
  • Carry out all elective and emergency obstetric/Gynecological cases in theatre.
  • Conduct all elective and emergency surgical cases in theatre.
  • Carry out special clinics in the hospital on weekly basis i.e., SOPC, GOPC, HRC, MOPC and POPC.
  • Attend to all medical legal cases, i.e. Filling of P3 forms and attend court sessions as deem fit.
  • Ensure survivors with sexual assault cases are promptly attended in GBV centre.
  • Ensure all referrals both Emergency and Elective, to secondary and tertiary care centers are done promptly.

Human Resource

  • Be a team leader in the hospital and in the care of patients.
  • Supervision of the nursing in charge of the department
  • Developing and managing leave plans and duty rotas for the department
  • Managing disciplinary cases that arise from the departments with support from the NOIC, HR and management.
  • Attend the Clinical staff meetings and give program updates as required.
  • Manage the Clinical Services Program in acting capacity when the Health Manager is not in office
  • Co-ordinate and Participate the Continuous Medical Education (CME) for staff and give updates on care of patients.

Program activities

  • Conduct daily ward rounds in respective wards.
  • Be the doctor on call on weekly basis, 24hrs/7 days.
  • Carry out all emergency surgical/obstetric cases in theatre.
  • Conduct all special clinics on weekly basis, SOPC, GOPC, HRC, POPC, MOPC.
  • Properly document patient diagnosis, plans of treatment and care on patient files.
  • Attend morning handover meetings and give feedback on patient care.
  • Carry out all elective surgical and gynecological cases.
  • Attend to all medical legal issues, fill P3 forms and attend court sessions.
  • Lead in death audits of the department in a timely manner, action points documented and followed up
  • Heading the quality improvement team for the department and ensuring action plans are completed.
  • Fill the referral forms for both emergency and elective referrals.

Reporting and Coordination

  • Information sharing: Regularly share and discuss timely, accurate and relevant information with communities about; access and eligibility to services, expected staff behavior, and community feedback, safeguarding mechanisms and how to use them.
  • Feedback Collection and reporting: Promote the formal feedback mechanisms to capture, monitor, respond to, and act on feedback and complaints from communities by documenting feedback received from the community through informal interactions, observations, and focus group discussions. Reporting community needs, preferences, and feedback to managers and client responsiveness focal persons.

Others

  • Any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery, MBChB.
  • Registered with Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board.
  • Minimum 2 yrs of working experience in a busy hospital.
  • Able to work with minimal supervision.

Required Experience & Competencies:

  • Be flexible, a team player and result oriented.
  • Be ready to work in challenging and multitasking environment.
  • Computer literacy in MS Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, is desired.
