1. Terms of Reference – Consultancy for Training on Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills

Overview

APHRC is seeking to engage a qualified and experienced consultant to design and deliver a targeted short course on Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills. These core competencies are essential for professionals working in research, operations, and programmatic areas. They enable staff to evaluate challenges critically, consider evidence systematically, and develop strategic, effective, and innovative solutions in their work.

Objectives of the Consultancy

  • Design a customized training program tailored to the unique needs of APHRC staff.
  • Deliver practical sessions that blend theory and hands-on exercises to enhance problem-solving capabilities.
  • Equip participants with tools and frameworks to apply critical thinking in real-world research and operational contexts.
  • Assess learning outcomes through pre- and post-training evaluations.

Key Tasks

  • Conduct a brief needs assessment to align the training content with participant requirements.
  • Develop training materials, including slides, handouts, case studies, and exercises.
  • Facilitate training sessions over an agreed period (in-person, virtual, or hybrid).
  • Provide a final report summarizing training outcomes, participant feedback, and recommendations for follow-up.

Required Profile of the Consultant

  • Demonstrated expertise in training professionals on critical thinking and problem-solving.
  • Background in adult learning or professional development preferred.
  • Ability to translate complex concepts into engaging, accessible training formats.
  • Strong facilitation and communication skills.

2. Research Assistants – Partnership for Education of Health Professionals (PEP) Project

Number of Positions Available: 18
Project Timeline: June – July 2025
Location: Fieldwork in 11 Counties – Narok, Turkana, Wajir, West Pokot, Tana River, Trans Nzoia, Marsabit, Bomet, Kwale, Nairobi, and Mombasa.

Project Background

The Research Capacity Strengthening (RCS) Division at APHRC is recruiting 18 Research Assistants (RAs) for the PEP Project, which focuses on strengthening the management of Cardiometabolic Diseases (CMDs) in Kenya. This project is rooted in generating robust research evidence and advancing the skills of health professionals through hands-on capacity building.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Assist in data collection through interviews, surveys, and other fieldwork tools.
  • Conduct community mobilization and maintain engagement with local stakeholders.
  • Ensure the integrity, accuracy, and confidentiality of all data collected.
  • Adhere strictly to ethical research practices, including informed consent.
  • Maintain daily logs and field reports as per the project’s guidelines.
  • Participate in training sessions to understand study protocols and data collection tools.

Desired Attributes

  • Experience working in field-based research projects.
  • Familiarity with healthcare systems and/or cardiometabolic diseases is a plus.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, especially in engaging with communities and stakeholders.
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision in diverse and sometimes challenging field conditions.
  • Willingness to travel and work in any of the specified counties.
