The Learning for Life (L4L): Building a Resilient and Responsive Health Workforce in Africa programme is a 4-year initiative delivered through Amref’s Institute of Capacity Development (ICD). In partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, the programme operates in Kenya, Senegal, and Zambia in its initial phase.
L4L is anchored on three transformative pillars:
- Health Employment – enhancing job opportunities in the health sector.
- Health Entrepreneurship – promoting innovative health business models.
- Health Ecosystem – strengthening health systems through regulation, leadership, and infrastructure.
The programme aims to develop a new generation of healthcare professionals and entrepreneurs, empowered to revolutionize healthcare delivery in Africa.

Overview
The Research Analyst plays a central role in shaping strategic interventions within the Learning for Life programme. This position requires a systems thinker who is passionate about health innovation, entrepreneurship, and youth employment. The role involves conducting in-depth research and analysis to inform the programme’s direction, monitor emerging trends, assess economic viability, and help drive sustainable change across Africa’s health sector.
Key Responsibilities
1. Research and Analysis
- Conduct desk reviews, interviews, and field visits to collect qualitative and quantitative data.
- Perform market, policy, and ecosystem analysis to understand innovation opportunities and challenges.
- Interpret and synthesize complex data to inform decision-making.
- Use analytical tools like Excel, Python, or R for data analysis.
- Example: Map and assess business models of health startups across Africa.
2. Problem Solving and Strategy Development
- Break down complex issues into actionable solutions.
- Build models and hypotheses to test programmatic approaches.
- Design implementation roadmaps and strategic documents.
- Example: Develop a scale-up strategy for digital health solutions in West Africa.
3. Client Deliverables and Communication
- Create structured reports, presentations, and data visualizations for stakeholders.
- Translate data insights into practical recommendations.
- Support stakeholder workshops and produce briefing materials.
- Example: Prepare a 5-year investment roadmap or stakeholder landscape map.
4. Stakeholder Engagement
- Assist in conducting partner interviews and consultations.
- Document findings and maintain stakeholder records.
5. Internal Knowledge Development
- Contribute to toolkits, policy briefs, and landscape reviews.
- Participate in internal knowledge-sharing sessions.
- Example: Build a comprehensive database of innovative health solutions.
6. Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL)
- Support MEL framework implementation for innovation and entrepreneurship components.
- Track progress toward key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Analyze MEL data to support adaptive programming and learning.
- Develop dashboards and visualizations to communicate outcomes effectively.
7. Additional Responsibilities
- Undertake other relevant tasks as assigned by the supervisor to support programme objectives.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- A Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Political Science, International Relations, Social Sciences, or related disciplines (a Master’s degree is preferred).
- At least three (3) years of experience in research, analytics, or business strategy within a consulting, international development, or fast-paced organizational setting.
- Demonstrated interest in:
- Health systems strengthening
- Health innovation and entrepreneurship
- Youth employment and economic development
Skills and Competencies
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
- Proficiency in data analysis tools such as Python, R, or Excel.
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
- Ability to present data in a compelling and digestible format.
- Organizational and time management excellence.
- Capacity to work independently and collaboratively in high-paced environments.
- Decision-making based on data-driven insights.
- Fluency in English is essential; French proficiency is an added advantage.
Desirable (but not mandatory) Assets
- Experience working with or within the startup ecosystem, particularly in health innovation.
- Familiarity with Africa’s health and employment policy landscape.
