Position Overview

As a Market Research Consultant, your mission is to uncover actionable business opportunities across different geographic regions in Kenya. Using a combination of data analysis, field research, and strategic evaluation, you’ll help organizations and stakeholders identify where and how they should invest, build, or expand businesses.

You’ll work independently or in collaboration with other consultants and field teams to generate local insights, conduct competitive assessments, and translate your findings into clear and compelling recommendations.

Key Responsibilities

1. Opportunity Identification

  • Evaluate a variety of data sources including demographic, economic, and behavioral datasets to assess potential business opportunities across towns, cities, and rural areas in Kenya.
  • Determine which sectors are likely to thrive in specific locations based on income levels, consumer behaviors, and economic activity.

2. Feasibility and Demand Analysis

  • Conduct location-specific feasibility assessments that include:
    • Customer segmentation
    • Income and spending patterns
    • Consumer behaviors and purchasing motivations
  • Identify unmet demand and evaluate the potential product-market fit.

3. Competitive Analysis

  • Map existing competitors operating in the same or similar business categories within a target area.
  • Identify and assess competitor pricing, distribution channels, marketing tactics, and customer value propositions.
  • Perform SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analyses or conduct benchmarking studies to define positioning for new business concepts.

4. Research Execution

  • Lead both desk research (literature review, data mining, database analysis) and field research (surveys, structured interviews, observational studies).
  • Collaborate with local data collection teams, community representatives, or enumerators to gather accurate and on-the-ground market intelligence.
  • Validate assumptions with field data and refine hypotheses based on qualitative and quantitative findings.

5. Reporting and Presentation

  • Synthesize insights into strategic deliverables including:
    • Slide presentations
    • Market briefs
    • Strategic recommendations
    • Risk and opportunity summaries
  • Present findings to a variety of stakeholders including internal leadership, clients, investors, or development partners.
  • Make data-backed recommendations to support business setup or scaling strategies.
