About the EU Delegation to Kenya
The EU Delegation to Kenya functions as a key representative office of the European Union, working closely with the Government of Kenya, civil society, private sector actors, and the international community to strengthen EU-Kenya relations. Through its Political, Press, and Information Section, the Delegation works to promote the EU’s foreign policy, support development cooperation, engage in political dialogue, and ensure effective communication and public diplomacy.
Introduction to the Traineeship Programme
The EU Delegation to Kenya is committed to offering young graduates an opportunity to acquire first-hand experience of the EU’s work in a dynamic and multi-cultural diplomatic setting. This six-month programme is designed to enhance the professional and personal development of the selected trainees, giving them exposure to political reporting, media engagement, and communication strategy.
The traineeship will be hosted by the Political, Press, and Information Section, which plays a critical role in the daily operations of the Delegation. From contributing to political analyses to maintaining the Delegation’s media presence, trainees will be part of a vibrant team, actively participating in the advancement of EU interests in Kenya.

Job Description
As a trainee in the Political, Press, and Information Section, you will be exposed to a wide array of tasks that reflect the real-world responsibilities of EU officers and staff. You will work under the direct supervision of experienced professionals who will provide guidance and mentorship throughout your assignment.
Key Responsibilities
- Political Analysis and Reporting
- Assist in monitoring Kenyan political developments, including trends, events, and policy decisions.
- Support the political adviser in drafting reports, briefs, and political notes.
- Conduct background research and data gathering to inform the Delegation’s assessments of the political climate.
- Media Engagement
- Contribute to the Delegation’s engagement strategy with local and international media outlets.
- Support the drafting of press releases, media statements, and communication materials.
- Public Communication and Social Media
- Under the guidance of the Press and Information Officer, manage updates for the Delegation’s website and social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn.
- Assist in curating multimedia content such as infographics, video snippets, and blog entries to highlight EU activities and projects in Kenya.
- Design and Layout of Communication Materials
- Aid in the design and formatting of brochures, newsletters, posters, and other public-facing documents.
- Support the conceptualization and production of promotional campaigns.
- Press Review and Monitoring
- Compile daily press reviews covering national and regional news relevant to EU interests.
- Flag important developments and suggest actions where necessary.
- Administrative and Logistical Support
- Assist with the preparation of internal and external meetings.
- Take minutes and produce summaries for meetings, workshops, or briefings.
- Help coordinate logistics for public diplomacy events or media engagements.
- Other Duties
- Perform additional tasks assigned by the Head of Section or other senior staff.
- Participate in team meetings, Delegation-wide briefings, and knowledge-sharing sessions.
Required Qualifications and Skills
To qualify for the traineeship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Educational Background: A completed university degree in any of the following fields: international relations, political science, security studies, journalism, media and communication, development studies, economics, or any other related discipline with a focus on African affairs.
- Analytical and Research Skills: Strong capacity to interpret complex political and social developments. Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research, synthesize information, and produce well-structured reports or briefs.
- Communication Proficiency: Excellent written and oral communication skills in English. Knowledge of Kiswahili or another local language is an added advantage.
- Digital and Media Literacy: Familiarity with digital communication tools and social media platforms. Experience in using website CMS (e.g., WordPress), graphics software (e.g., Canva, Adobe InDesign), or social media scheduling tools (e.g., Buffer, Hootsuite) will be a plus.
- Teamwork and Collaboration: Must be a team player who is open to learning, adaptable, and able to work in a multicultural environment. Willingness to collaborate across units and with external stakeholders.
- Initiative and Motivation: A proactive attitude and a strong sense of responsibility. Should view the internship as a gateway to learning and career development.
- EU Foreign Policy Awareness: General knowledge of EU foreign policy and its priorities, especially those concerning Africa. Understanding the EU’s role in Kenya or regional integration frameworks such as the African Union will be advantageous.
