International Rescue Committee Hiring Laboratory Technologist

The laboratory technologist will play a key role in enhancing the quality of care by ensuring that high-standard laboratory services are provided to beneficiaries. They will supervise all laboratory assistants, fostering their development through training programs and on-the-job learning. The technologist will report directly to the Head of the Department (HOD).

Program management:

  • Perform Laboratory investigations as per clinician’s request and ensure accurate, reliable, and timely results.
  • Maintain order and smooth flow of patients.
  • Ensure smooth running of Laboratory activities by controlling the patients in the stipulated lab reception SOPs.
  • Ensure that internal quality controls (IQC) and external quality controls (EQC)are done for every test
  • Participate in in-service training and regular on-job refresher courses for National and refugee staff.
  • Ensure that all relevant records are updated and maintained.
  • Monitor and supervise proper usage of laboratory reagents.
  • Maintain Laboratory machines in good order- cleaning and covering after use.
  • Ensure general laboratory cleanliness is maintained.
  • Report any unusual statistics or observations to the head of Department.
  • Ensure SOPS are used at all times.
  • Ensuring safety procedures in the laboratory are maintained.
  • Preparing of stains, reagents and solutions necessary for all lab tests.
  • Participate in the planning and forecasting of laboratory supplies in the department.
  • Ensure safety protocols are followed in the laboratory
  • Organize biological samples for shipment to referral Laboratories.
  • Writing and reviewing SOPs.
  • Timely submission of weekly, Monthly, and Quartey reports.
  • Keeping up to date with technical developments, especially those which can save time and improve reliability.
  • Performing laboratory tests in order to produce reliable and precise data to support scientific investigations.

Human Resource:

  • Supervise laboratory assistants in collaboration with HOD to ensure work is done properly.
  • Countercheck all work done by Laboratory assistants.

Program activities:

  • Ensure laboratory tests are performed accurately and timely.
  • Ensure revised SOPs are used in all testing procedures.
  • Ensure proper collection, packaging, and transportation of laboratory samples to Nairobi hospital and/or another outsourced Centre.
  • Ensure proper storage of laboratory reagents and cold chain system to avoid compromised reagents that may lead to false reporting.

Reporting and Coordination:

  • Ensure all laboratory reports are done on time and sent to the HOD, MEAL, and other offices as may be indicated.
  • Notify your supervisor and clinicians of all laboratory results that are above or below critical levels the normal threshold.
  • Report any laboratory incidents to HOD.
  • Information sharing: Regularly share and discuss timely, accurate and relevant information with communities about; access and eligibility to services, expected staff behavior, and community feedback, safeguarding mechanisms and how to use them.
  • Feedback Collection and reporting: Promote the formal feedback mechanisms to capture, monitor, respond to, and act on feedback and complaints from communities by documenting feedback received from the community through informal interactions, observations, and focus group discussions. Reporting community needs, preferences, and feedback to managers and client responsiveness focal persons.

Others:

  • Carry out any other duty assigned by your supervisor.

  • Timely reporting.

Qualifications

  • Diploma in medical laboratory sciences.
  • MUST be registered by KMLTTB.
  • Must have a valid practicing license.

Required Experience & Competencies:

  • 3 years’ experience in clinical laboratories.
  • Experience working with non-profitable organization.
  • Flexibility at work.
  • Cultural sensitivity.
  • Team player.
