Director, Public Interest & Advocacy Directorate

This senior-level position is designed for a visionary leader who is passionate about public interest issues, constitutional governance, and legal advocacy. The role provides an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of legal reform, stakeholder engagement, and public policy development.

Job Description
As the Director of Public Interest & Advocacy, you will report to the Secretary/CEO of the Law Society of Kenya and will be responsible for driving the Society’s advocacy agenda in alignment with its strategic plan. The Director will lead the Public Interest & Advocacy Directorate in developing, coordinating, and implementing programs that promote justice, the rule of law, and the protection of fundamental human rights.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Leadership
    • Provide leadership in the formulation and implementation of the Society’s public interest and advocacy strategies.
    • Collaborate with the LSK Council and other directorates to align advocacy programs with the overall goals of the Society.
    • Represent LSK in public policy debates, legal reform initiatives, and engagements with stakeholders at national and international levels.
  • Advocacy and Policy Development
    • Coordinate and oversee the drafting, review, and submission of legal and policy memoranda to government institutions, regulatory agencies, and parliamentary committees.
    • Monitor legislative and policy developments and guide the Society’s response to ensure protection of public interest and the legal profession.
    • Drive public campaigns and awareness initiatives on issues affecting access to justice, legal reform, and governance.
  • Stakeholder Engagement
    • Establish and maintain strategic partnerships with government institutions, civil society organizations, donor agencies, and legal practitioners.
    • Represent LSK in advocacy forums, workshops, task forces, and stakeholder consultations.
    • Foster collaborative relationships with legal and human rights organizations both locally and globally.
  • Public Interest Litigation
    • Initiate and coordinate the filing of public interest litigation on matters of national importance and public concern.
    • Supervise legal research, drafting, and representation in public interest matters handled by the Society.
    • Ensure proper documentation, reporting, and follow-up of court proceedings and legal outcomes.
  • Program Management and Reporting
    • Oversee the planning, budgeting, and implementation of all advocacy-related projects and programs.
    • Prepare periodic progress reports and updates for the Council, donors, and stakeholders.
    • Ensure compliance with institutional policies, donor requirements, and statutory obligations.
  • Capacity Building and Team Supervision
    • Lead, mentor, and build the capacity of the Advocacy Directorate team to deliver on their mandates.
    • Organize training workshops, seminars, and events to strengthen advocacy skills among LSK members and staff.
    • Evaluate staff performance and provide continuous professional development opportunities.

Key Attributes and Competencies Required:

  • Strong leadership and strategic management skills.
  • Excellent understanding of Kenya’s legal, political, and governance environment.
  • Proven experience in policy advocacy, legislative analysis, or public interest litigation.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to engage with diverse stakeholders including government officials, development partners, and civil society organizations.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and project management skills.
  • High level of professional ethics and integrity.
