About the Role

The position of Lecturer in Criminology and Criminal Justice at KCA University presents a unique opportunity for academic professionals to contribute meaningfully to a thriving educational environment. The successful candidate will play a vital role in teaching, research, student mentorship, and institutional development within the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice.

As a lecturer, you will engage directly with students across both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, ensuring a dynamic and enriching learning experience that prepares graduates to confront complex societal challenges with ethical and intellectual rigor.


Job Objective

The main objective of this role is to teach and conduct research in the field of Criminology and Criminal Justice. The Lecturer will also support academic administration, serve on departmental and university-wide committees, and provide mentorship to students, ensuring alignment with the university’s broader academic and development goals.


Key Duties and Responsibilities

As a Lecturer in Criminology and Criminal Justice, your responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Teaching and Learning:
    • Deliver lectures, tutorials, workshops, seminars, and other learning sessions at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
    • Design and implement interactive and engaging teaching methodologies to enhance student understanding and critical thinking.
    • Develop and revise teaching materials, schemes of work, course outlines, and assessments in accordance with curriculum standards.
  • Assessment and Evaluation:
    • Administer, mark, and evaluate examinations, assignments, and continuous assessment tests (CATs).
    • Provide timely and constructive feedback to students and maintain accurate records of academic progress and attendance.
  • Student Mentorship and Support:
    • Offer academic advising and mentorship to support student learning and development.
    • Refer students to appropriate university support services when needed and foster an inclusive and respectful learning environment.
  • Research and Publication:
    • Conduct scholarly research in areas related to Criminology and Criminal Justice.
    • Publish research findings in reputable refereed journals and present at academic conferences and departmental seminars.
    • Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research projects to support scholarly development among students.
  • Grant Proposal Development:
    • Prepare and submit research grant proposals to internal and external funding bodies.
    • Collaborate with colleagues on interdisciplinary research projects.
  • Curriculum Development:
    • Contribute to the planning, review, and continuous improvement of the departmental curriculum to reflect emerging trends and stakeholder needs.
    • Ensure the alignment of teaching content with academic and industry developments in Criminology and Criminal Justice.
  • University Service:
    • Participate in school and departmental committees and task forces.
    • Contribute to faculty and university-wide meetings, policy discussions, and academic planning sessions.
    • Represent the department in community engagement and university outreach initiatives.
  • Professional Development:
    • Pursue continuous professional development through workshops, training programs, and scholarly engagement.
    • Maintain current knowledge in the field of Criminology and Criminal Justice through ongoing learning and networking with academic peers.
  • Administrative Duties:
    • Maintain proper documentation and timely entry of student grades into the examination records system.
    • Attend and participate actively in departmental, faculty, and university meetings.
    • Undertake any other duties assigned by the Chair of Department or university management as necessary.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • A PhD in Criminology, Criminal Justice, or a related field from a recognized and accredited institution.
  • A Master’s degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice or a closely related discipline from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of progressive teaching experience at the university level or within the research/industry sector.
  • At least two (2) high-quality publications in peer-reviewed academic journals.
  • Registered with a relevant professional body (where applicable).
