Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen) stands as the leading electric power generating company in East Africa. Established in 1954 under the name Kenya Power Company (KPC), KenGen was tasked with the crucial responsibility of generating electric power for Kenya. Over the years, the organization has played a pivotal role in Kenya’s development journey, evolving from its early days under the management of East Africa Power & Lighting Company (later Kenya Power & Lighting Company) to its current status as a publicly listed company focused on innovation and sustainability.

KenGen continues to lead in electricity generation through an array of renewable energy sources such as geothermal, hydro, wind, and thermal. As part of its strategic growth and talent development, KenGen is now pleased to announce its 2025 Internship Program aimed at nurturing young professionals through hands-on exposure in a dynamic working environment.

Internship Opportunities

1. Geomaticist – Internship [HR/INT/GDD/03/2025]

The Geomaticist intern will support spatial data collection, mapping, and geospatial analysis within the Geothermal Development Department. Tasks include the use of GIS tools to prepare maps, participate in field data acquisition using GPS and total stations, and support data validation and quality control efforts for exploration and development.

2. Supply Chain Officer – Internship [HR/INT/SCM/01/2025]

Interns will assist the supply chain team in procurement planning, sourcing, inventory control, and contract management. Responsibilities include preparing tender documents, participating in bid evaluations, vendor registration support, and maintaining procurement records in compliance with public procurement regulations.

3. Security Officer – Internship [HR/INT/SEC/01/2025]

The Security Officer intern will work under the Security Services Department and support surveillance, access control, incident response, and implementation of security protocols at KenGen facilities. Duties include data entry of security logs, assisting in security assessments, and participating in safety drills.

4. Property Officer – Internship [HR/INT/CORPS/05/2025]

Duties will include supporting the management of company properties and real estate assets. Interns will assist in record management of leases, support site inspections, prepare property-related reports, and contribute to compliance with legal and environmental requirements.

5. Plant Operator (KIHBT) – Internship [HR/INT/OPS/05/2025]

Interns will assist experienced plant operators in monitoring and controlling energy generation units, observing safety and operational procedures, logging data, and reporting any deviations in plant performance. Ideal for candidates with background in plant operation from Kenya Institute of Highways and Building Technology (KIHBT).

6. Mechanical Technician – Internship [HR/INT/OPS/04/2025]

This role includes assisting in maintenance and repair of mechanical systems in power plants. Interns will support troubleshooting tasks, lubrication, condition monitoring, and preventive maintenance schedules to ensure optimal plant performance.

7. Mechanical Engineer – Internship [HR/INT/OPS/03/2025]

Mechanical engineering interns will be involved in project planning, plant maintenance strategies, design reviews, and performance analysis of mechanical systems. Assignments include support in installation of mechanical components, preparing technical drawings, and energy efficiency assessments.

8. Legal Officer – Internship [HR/INT/CS&LS/01/2025]

The intern will support legal documentation, assist in drafting contracts, participate in legal research, and provide clerical support during court cases. Exposure will include compliance management, corporate governance documentation, and board secretarial duties.

9. Knowledge Officer – Internship [HR/INT/BDS/02/2025]

Interns will be engaged in documentation, digitization, and dissemination of organizational knowledge. Responsibilities include content development, maintenance of knowledge portals, data archiving, and support to research and innovation teams.

10. Insurance Officer – Internship [HR/INT/COMSV/03/2025]

Duties include assisting in processing insurance claims, maintaining insurance records, preparing reports, and liaising with insurers and brokers. Interns will also help in data entry and insurance compliance audits.

11. ICT Officer – Internship [HR/INT/ICT/01/2025]

ICT interns will provide technical support in hardware, software, and network operations. Key tasks include systems troubleshooting, user support, IT inventory maintenance, and participating in IT infrastructure projects.

12. Hydrologist – Internship [HR/INT/BDS/01/2025]

Interns will support the monitoring of hydrological data including river flows and rainfall, maintaining water data stations, and performing data analysis to support hydro energy forecasting and resource planning.

13. Human Resource Officer – Internship [HR/INT/CORPS/04/2025]

Responsibilities include supporting recruitment processes, training coordination, employee welfare activities, and maintaining HR records. Interns will also assist in performance management and staff engagement initiatives.

14. Human Resource Assistant – Internship [HR/INT/COPSV/03/2025]

Interns will assist in clerical tasks related to employee onboarding, leave administration, file management, and organizing HR events and wellness programs.

15. Geophysicist – Internship [HR/INT/GDD/04/2025]

The role involves participating in geophysical surveys and data interpretation to support geothermal exploration. Interns will assist in data acquisition, processing of seismic and resistivity data, and generation of geophysical reports.

16. Geologist – Internship [HR/INT/GDD/02/2025]

Geology interns will help in field mapping, core logging, sample preparation, and supporting geological interpretation for geothermal development. Exposure will include participating in drilling projects and geothermal reservoir assessments.

17. Geochemist – Internship [HR/INT/GDD/01/2025]

The intern will work in the geochemistry lab conducting chemical analysis of geothermal fluids. Tasks include sample collection, preparing lab reports, and assisting in environmental monitoring related to geothermal emissions.

18. Environment Officer – Internship [HR/INT/COMSV/02/2025]

Interns will support environmental audits, impact assessments, and compliance monitoring. Responsibilities include waste management support, environmental awareness campaigns, and record keeping of environmental performance data.

19. Electrical Technician – Internship [HR/INT/OPS/02/2025]

This position involves assisting in installation, repair, and preventive maintenance of electrical equipment in power plants. Interns will work under supervision to ensure safety compliance and operational efficiency.

20. Electrical Engineer – Internship [HR/INT/OPS/01/2025]

Interns will participate in electrical project design, performance monitoring, fault diagnosis, and commissioning of electrical systems. The role includes exposure to energy audits and system reliability enhancement projects.

21. Economist – Internship [HR/INT/COMSV/01/2025]

Responsibilities include economic data collection and analysis, cost-benefit evaluations of energy projects, tariff analysis, and supporting budget planning processes. Interns will gain practical skills in economic modelling and regulatory economics.

22. Community Relations Officer – Internship [HR/INT/CSERV/02/2025]

Interns will assist in stakeholder engagement activities, community project monitoring, documentation of corporate social responsibility initiatives, and conflict resolution support in project areas.

23. Civil Engineer – Internship [HR/INT/GDD/05/2025]

Civil engineering interns will support construction supervision, structural integrity assessments, and maintenance of civil works in geothermal and hydroelectric sites. Duties include preparing technical drawings and participating in site inspections.

24. Administration Officer – Internship [HR/INT/CSERV/01/2025]

The role involves supporting administrative processes including office management, document filing, logistics coordination, and internal communication facilitation within departments.

25. Accountant – Internship [HR/INT/FIN/01/2025]

Interns will be responsible for supporting bookkeeping, financial reporting, reconciliations, invoice processing, and participation in audits. They will also assist in maintaining financial databases and generating management reports.
