Primary Purpose of the Job
The Tutorial Fellow will support delivering high-quality nursing education through teaching, research, and student mentorship. The role involves facilitating tutorials, clinical instruction and academic support to undergraduate and/or postgraduate students. The role holder will contribute to curriculum development and research activities while fostering a conducive learning environment in line with meeting the department’s key performance indicators and targets, including the overall University mission and vision.
Key Responsibilities
1. Teaching and Learning
- Deliver lectures, tutorials, and practical sessions in the assigned area of expertise/teaching.
- Prepare and deliver high-quality teaching materials, including lecture notes, handouts, assessment tools, including digital content.
- Supervise and assess students during clinical placements to ensure competency and practical nursing skills.
- Supervise and mentor Nursing students (KRCHN/Higher diploma/BScN/M and Upgrading ENM/ECHN) in their academic projects, research, or other areas.
- Apply and utilise modern teaching methods, including e-learning tools and student-centred approaches.
- Engage in all departmental teaching activities, including timetabling, course-loading, moderation of exams, supervision and marking exams, entry, and preparation of the graduation list.
- Participate in clinical teaching in the assigned area of specialisation.
- Provide academic guidance and mentorship to students, including advising on academic progress and career development.
2. Curriculum Review and Development
- Participate in designing, reviewing, and updating course curricula to align with current healthcare standards, regulatory requirements, and industry/ market trends.
- Contribute to developing innovative teaching methodologies, including simulation-based learning and e-learning platforms.
3. Research, Innovation and Scholarship
- Conduct individual or collaborative research in the field of expertise for personal and departmental growth.
- Continuously publish findings in peer-reviewed journals, books, seminars or conferences.
- Identify and participate in seeking research grants and other funding opportunities to support academic projects.
- Identify and engage in fundraising activities in the department.
- Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students’ research projects and dissertations.
4. Academic Administration
- Assists in coordinating departmental activities such as examinations, timetabling and student evaluations.
- Participate in departmental and faculty meetings, committees, and other institutional/academic activities.
- Collaborating with other academics and lecturers to improve teaching methods and expand the knowledge base.
- Contribute to program accreditation processes and quality assurance systems.
- Participate in university and departmental marketing initiatives.
5. Community Engagement and Professional Development
- Collaborate with external organizations, industries, and the community to enhance knowledge sharing.
- Facilitate partnerships with healthcare institutions to enhance clinical training opportunities for students.
- Engage in professional development activities, such as workshops, seminars, and conferences.
- Represent the institution in public forums, professional bodies, and academic networks.
- Staying current on evidence-based practices to enhance teaching and clinical instruction.
Qualifications
Minimum Education: Master of Science in Midwifery; Must be registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya and hold a valid practice license.
Experience: At least three (3) years teaching in nursing training and at least two (2) years’ experience in clinical practice; Teaching or training experience in a higher education institution is an added advantage; experience in curriculum development and evaluation, and supporting a virtual learning environment
