Position: Medical Officer Interns

Department: Medical Services Division

Job Overview:

As a Medical Officer Intern, you will be assigned to multiple clinical areas on a rotational basis, including:

  • Inpatient Units
  • Outpatient Units
  • Internal Medicine
  • General Surgery
  • Obstetrics and Gynaecology
  • Community Health
  • Paediatrics
  • Psychiatry

The goal of the internship is to enable graduates to consolidate their medical knowledge and clinical skills under supervision, preparing them to become fully registered and competent medical practitioners.


Key Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Admissions Processes

  • Serve as the initial point of contact for patients admitted to the hospital.
  • Conduct thorough clerking (medical history and physical examination).
  • Initiate accurate diagnosis and management plans in consultation with supervising medical officers, senior registrars, or consultants.

2. Monitoring and Patient Care

  • Participate in daily ward rounds across various departments.
  • Document treatment plans and follow through on their execution.
  • Provide regular updates to consultants regarding patient progress.

3. Surgical Skills Acquisition

  • Learn and assist in surgical and obstetric procedures following KMPDC logbook/guidelines.
  • Gain exposure to preoperative, intraoperative, and post-operative care.
  • Develop proficiency in basic surgical techniques as part of hands-on training.

4. Implementation of Quality Initiatives

  • Execute clinical procedures in line with Joint Commission International (JCI) standards, Kaizen methodology, and other internal quality guidelines.
  • Embrace and uphold safety, hygiene, and ethical protocols to maintain the highest level of patient care.

5. Continuous Professional Development

  • Attend Continuing Medical Education (CME) sessions and journal clubs.
  • Present clinical cases and research topics to enhance peer learning and develop evidence-based practices.
  • Participate in workshops and in-service training sessions to stay current with medical advances.

Qualifications & Requirements:

To be considered for this internship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Academic Qualification: A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery from a recognized and accredited medical institution.
  • Licensure: Must possess a valid internship license issued by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC).
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in computer applications relevant to hospital operations and record keeping.
  • Knowledge of Safety Guidelines: A sound understanding of safety protocols and patient care standards is essential.
