Job Advertisement – Clinical Nutritionist/Dietitian (Reliever, 3 Months)

Location: M.P Shah Hospital
Department: Nursing Division
Reporting to: Deputy Chief Nursing Officer (DCNO)
Engagement: Temporary (3 months)

Overall Purpose of the Role
The Clinical Nutritionist/Dietitian will provide therapeutic dietary counseling and treatment for both inpatients and outpatients. This role supports the clinical team by ensuring the nutritional wellbeing of patients, ultimately contributing to reduced hospital stays, improved recovery outcomes, and prevention of readmissions.


Key Roles and Responsibilities

1. Nutrition Services

  • Deliver nutrition therapy that aligns with patients’ clinical goals within a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Calculate and prescribe appropriate nutrition regimens, including enteral and parenteral feeding based on medical indications and patient-specific needs.

2. Nutrition Counseling

  • Conduct nutritional screening and assessments for patients to identify dietary needs and restrictions.
  • Continuously evaluate nutritional plans and modify them based on treatment progression or medical changes.
  • Develop personalized dietary care plans tailored to individual health conditions and treatment goals.
  • Provide age-appropriate counseling to individuals and groups for healthier food choices and improved lifestyles.

3. Diet Plan Formulation

  • Monitor and record patients’ nutritional progress using standard medical guidelines.
  • Liaise with physicians and healthcare providers to align nutritional plans with medical treatments and outcomes.
  • Ensure all dietary needs are effectively addressed in coordination with other clinical departments.

4. Nutrition Education

  • Educate patients and their families on proper dietary practices, meal planning, and cooking techniques that align with their medical needs.
  • Foster long-term healthy eating habits through clear, consistent, and supportive nutrition education.

5. Compliance with Policies and Standards

  • Supervise food service operations to ensure adherence to nutritional standards, hygiene, safety, and quality benchmarks.
  • Regularly update and maintain nutrition education materials and dietary guidelines for staff and patients.

6. Menu Development and Standardization

  • Develop and standardize therapeutic menus and recipes that meet the specific dietary requirements of different patient demographics.
  • Ensure food offerings meet both nutritional specifications and patient satisfaction criteria in terms of taste and presentation.

7. Training and Development

  • Provide mentorship to dietetic interns and in-service training for healthcare providers to promote awareness and best practices in clinical nutrition.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development through workshops, seminars, and peer collaboration to remain updated with current nutritional standards.

Qualifications and Experience

Minimum Academic Requirements

  • Diploma or Degree in Nutrition from a recognized institution.
  • Valid practicing license from the Nutrition Association of Kenya (NAK).

Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years of continuous working experience in an acute care hospital setting.
