Job Purpose

The Underwriting Specialist, Risk Surveys & Technical will support the insurance underwriting process through evaluation of proposed risks, data analysis, risk assessment surveys, and documentation management. The position is primarily focused on assisting in the determination of acceptable risks, pricing policies according to company guidelines, and contributing to the overall efficiency and service quality of the underwriting department.

This role bridges the technical assessment of client environments with core underwriting practices to ensure quality risk selection, adequate policy pricing, and timely delivery of client services. The incumbent will work closely with senior underwriters, risk surveyors, clients, and intermediaries.


Key Responsibilities

1. General Underwriting Support

  • Assist in reviewing proposal forms to ensure accurate and complete information is captured.
  • Work under the guidance of senior staff to evaluate the acceptability of proposed risks.
  • Participate in preparing renewal notices and following up on renewals to maximize client retention.
  • Assist in organizing and preparing underwriting files and documents for internal review.
  • Keep detailed records of premiums, including processing and reconciliation within required timelines.
  • Maintain professional business relationships with both clients and intermediaries.
  • Monitor customer service levels to ensure excellent delivery and timely resolution of inquiries.

2. Risk Surveys

  • Collaborate with senior underwriting specialists during risk and site surveys to identify risk exposures.
  • Assist in coordinating appointments with external surveyors when required for more complex assessments.
  • Support the execution of pre-insurance and desktop risk surveys as part of the decision-making process.
  • Help compile and gather necessary data and information from clients and intermediaries to facilitate accurate risk assessments.
  • Contribute to the analysis and documentation of findings from risk surveys to support underwriting evaluations.

3. Reporting and Administrative Tasks

  • Prepare standard reports on underwriting activities and the status of risk surveys for internal monitoring.
  • Support the generation of management-level reports related to risk assessments and underwriting performance.
  • Collaborate with the claims department by providing them with relevant documentation and underwriting insights that may be essential for claim adjudication.
  • Ensure timely updates to client records and contribute to the overall tracking of account performance.

Knowledge, Experience and Qualifications Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline.
  • 1 to 3 years of experience in an insurance underwriting role.
  • Progression towards industry-recognized certifications such as ACII (Associateship of the Chartered Insurance Institute) or AIIK (Associateship of the Insurance Institute of Kenya).
  • Strong analytical skills and keen attention to detail.
  • Capability to thrive in a collaborative team environment.
  • Solid organizational abilities and the capacity to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt in a dynamic, fast-paced setting.

Technical and Functional Competencies

  • Sound understanding of insurance regulatory frameworks and compliance guidelines.
  • Broad knowledge of general insurance products and underwriting procedures.
  • Ability to apply marketing and sales management principles to support business development.
  • Professionalism and diplomacy in managing relationships with clients and intermediaries.
