The successful candidate will be responsible for designing and implementing cutting-edge instructional content, collaborating with various departments, and staying abreast of the latest trends and technologies in e-learning.
Job Objective
The Instructional Designer will be responsible for designing, developing, and implementing engaging instructional materials and e-learning courses. This role involves working closely with subject matter experts (SMEs) to create interactive and learner-centred content that aligns with both educational and organizational objectives.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
1. Course Design and Development
- Develop comprehensive instructional materials, including e-learning modules, training guides, course outlines, and assessments.
- Apply well-established instructional design principles, adult learning theories, and pedagogical best practices to design content that enhances learner engagement and knowledge retention.
- Ensure all learning resources align with the specified course outcomes, institutional standards, and accreditation requirements.
- Continuously refine and update learning materials based on curriculum changes, feedback from instructors, and evolving educational strategies.
2. Content Creation and Enhancement
- Collaborate closely with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to transform complex academic or technical content into clear, concise, and engaging learning experiences.
- Design interactive content that includes multimedia elements such as animations, video lectures, case studies, simulations, and infographics to accommodate different learning styles.
- Ensure that all instructional content meets accessibility and inclusivity standards to cater to diverse learners, including those with disabilities.
- Edit, proofread, and revise content to ensure consistency, clarity, and alignment with learning objectives.
3. Learning Technology Integration
- Manage and maintain content within Learning Management Systems (LMS), ensuring proper organization, navigation, and version control.
- Explore and implement innovative digital learning tools and methodologies such as gamification, microlearning, and immersive technologies like virtual or augmented reality, where applicable.
- Collaborate with the IT and e-learning teams to troubleshoot technical issues related to online content and platform compatibility.
- Ensure proper metadata tagging and reporting structures are in place within the LMS to track learner engagement and progress effectively.
4. Assessment and Evaluation
- Design formative and summative assessment tools such as quizzes, assignments, and simulations to evaluate learner comprehension and course effectiveness.
- Monitor and analyze learner performance data using LMS analytics and other feedback tools.
- Use data-driven insights to continuously revise and enhance instructional materials and strategies.
- Conduct usability testing and learner experience evaluations to identify and rectify instructional design issues and improve content delivery.
5. Collaboration and Training Support
- Partner with academic staff, trainers, and the Human Resources department to design and deliver comprehensive training programs tailored to departmental and institutional goals.
- Train faculty, teaching assistants, and administrative staff on effective use of e-learning platforms, instructional tools, and content delivery techniques.
- Provide technical and instructional support to departments implementing blended and online learning initiatives.
- Facilitate workshops and seminars to promote best practices in instructional design and digital pedagogy.
6. Research and Professional Development
- Stay updated with global trends, research, and developments in instructional technology, e-learning, and education design.
- Actively engage in professional development initiatives such as webinars, conferences, and advanced certification programs.
- Evaluate emerging tools and platforms for potential adoption at the university.
- Share knowledge and experiences with colleagues to foster a collaborative and innovative academic environment.
7. Other Responsibilities
- Ensure that all digital content and instructional products meet compliance standards, including SCORM, xAPI, and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).
- Contribute to the strategic planning and implementation of digital transformation projects at the university.
- Maintain accurate documentation of all projects, including design plans, project timelines, feedback reports, and evaluation metrics.
- Perform any other duties as assigned by the supervisor from time to time or as outlined in the detailed job description.
Qualifications and Experience
- A Master’s Degree in Instructional Design, Education Technology, or a related field from an accredited or recognized institution.
- At least 2–3 years of professional experience in instructional design, curriculum development, or e-learning development in a higher education or corporate setting.
- Proficient in using Learning Management Systems (LMS) for content management and learner tracking.
- Skilled in using e-learning development software such as Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate, and Camtasia.
- Strong grasp of instructional design models including ADDIE, Bloom’s Taxonomy, and SAM.
- Experienced in multimedia content creation using tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, or equivalent platforms.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including technical writing and editing.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams and independently manage multiple projects.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for evaluating learning outcomes and program effectiveness.
- Knowledge of accessibility standards and instructional design compliance including SCORM and xAPI.
