Legal Intern Position

Position Overview

This internship program is meticulously designed for aspiring legal professionals who are interested in gaining hands-on experience in corporate and commercial law. The Legal Intern will be exposed to dynamic legal tasks that cut across various areas including contracts, compliance, corporate governance, conveyancing, legal advisory, and litigation support. This opportunity is ideal for individuals aiming to understand the legal frameworks of investment, real estate, and corporate transactions in Kenya.

The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Legal Officer and collaborate closely with other departments. This role demands a proactive and curious mindset with the ability to learn quickly and adapt in a fast-paced business environment.


Key Responsibilities

1. Contract Management and Drafting

  • Review, draft, and revise a variety of legal contracts such as Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs), service level agreements, customer agreements, supplier agreements, and professional services contracts.
  • Develop and maintain standard contract templates for common transactions.
  • Ensure legal documents comply with applicable laws and are tailored to meet business objectives.

2. Corporate Governance and Legal Compliance

  • Assist in maintaining statutory books, registers, and safe custody of key legal documents.
  • Participate in corporate secretarial tasks including preparing board minutes and resolutions.
  • Facilitate timely business filings and ensure that the company remains compliant with all statutory obligations.

3. Conveyancing and Real Estate Transactions

  • Support conveyancing processes relating to real estate sales, leases, and acquisitions.
  • Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to execute real estate documentation.
  • Perform due diligence on property transactions including land searches and verification.

4. Strategic Legal Advisory

  • Aid in providing strategic legal counsel on a wide range of business activities.
  • Work alongside senior legal staff to analyze new product ideas or business models and highlight potential legal risks.

5. Legal Research and Litigation Support

  • Conduct legal research on various laws and statutes relevant to the company’s operations.
  • Draft legal opinions and briefs as required.
  • Assist in preparation for litigation matters including compiling documents, reviewing pleadings, and liaising with external counsel.

6. Interdepartmental Collaboration

  • Work closely with other departments (e.g., Investments, Real Estate, Finance) to offer legal input in cross-functional projects.
  • Ensure consistent alignment of legal advice with corporate goals and industry regulations.

7. Administrative Duties and Record-Keeping

  • Maintain and update the department’s safes, databases, and document registers.
  • Ensure all legal documents are stored appropriately and accessible when required.
  • Assist in developing and implementing internal legal compliance policies and best practices.

8. Continuous Improvement

  • Provide recommendations to improve the effectiveness of legal processes.
  • Learn and apply new legal technologies that enhance the team’s output.

9. Other Duties

  • Undertake any additional duties as may be assigned from time to time in support of the legal team’s objectives.

Candidate Requirements

  • A Second Class Upper Division Degree in Law (LL. B) from a recognized university.
  • A minimum of a B+ grade in O-levels (high school).
  • Strong appreciation of the commercial application of law.
  • Ability to identify, evaluate, and mitigate legal risks.
  • A self-motivated team player with the ability to work independently.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to work under tight deadlines and manage multiple responsibilities.
  • High analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
