Job Purpose
The Nurse Midwife will deliver holistic and professional care to patients and their families across antenatal, intrapartum (labour and delivery), postnatal, and newborn care settings. The role requires the ability to operate collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment and provide care that meets AAR Hospital’s high standards of safety, dignity, and patient-centeredness.
Duties and Responsibilities
i) General Expectations
The Nurse Midwife will be expected to uphold a consistent level of professional and compassionate care in line with the hospital’s ethos. Duties include:
- Welcoming patients and families warmly, and introducing oneself to foster trust and rapport.
- Providing comprehensive orientation for all admitted patients and their next of kin.
- Performing structured, timely bedside nursing handovers for shift continuity.
- Accurate and timely completion of all relevant documentation, including patient charts, forms, and care bundles.
- Performing risk-based pressure area care, including scheduled patient turning to prevent bedsores.
- Providing daily updates to family members on the patient’s progress and condition.
- Administering medications in a timely, safe manner and in compliance with hospital protocols.
- Educating patients and families based on assessed healthcare needs.
- Ensuring all patients are appropriately attired in hospital clothing.
- Promptly addressing any patient or family concerns.
- Ensuring all patient charges are accurately captured in the hospital billing system.
ii) Specific Roles
The Nurse Midwife will rotate across different maternity and newborn care units. Specific responsibilities per area include:
A. Labour and Delivery Unit Nurse
Technical Skills
- Monitoring maternal and fetal well-being using both manual methods and electronic monitoring equipment.
- Conducting vaginal examinations to assess cervical dilation and labor progress.
- Administering medications such as oxytocin, antibiotics, or analgesics in accordance with prescribed regimens.
- Performing or assisting in normal vaginal deliveries.
- Conducting neonatal resuscitation as needed.
- Observing and maintaining strict sterile techniques throughout labour and delivery procedures.
- Documenting labour progress using partographs and other tools.
- Assisting obstetricians in emergency and elective operative deliveries (e.g., cesarean sections).
- Mentoring and supervising newly inducted nurses on maternity procedures.
- Prompt documentation and escalation of any incidents occurring in the unit.
Operational Skills
- Preparing the delivery suite with all necessary equipment and ensuring readiness for emergencies.
- Collaborating with obstetricians, anesthetists, and surgical teams for coordinated patient management.
- Providing emotional and informational support to laboring mothers and their birth partners.
- Performing triage for incoming labour cases to ensure proper prioritization and care planning.
- Adhering to infection prevention and control measures rigorously.
- Maintaining thorough documentation of all care provided.
B. Postnatal Ward Nurse (Mother and Baby Care)
Technical Skills
- Monitoring postnatal mothers for signs of hemorrhage, infection, or other complications.
- Managing uterine involution, vaginal bleeding (lochia), and assisting in breastfeeding initiation.
- Administering prescribed medications and managing IV lines and catheters as necessary.
- Educating mothers on personal hygiene, breastfeeding techniques, family planning, and danger signs.
- Supporting early ambulation and facilitating mother-infant bonding.
- Conducting regular health education sessions covering family planning and other identified needs.
Operational Skills
- Providing emotional reassurance and orientation to mothers within the ward environment.
- Maintaining updated and accurate patient records, including mother and baby discharge summaries.
- Facilitating safe practices such as rooming-in and skin-to-skin contact to promote bonding.
- Escalating complications promptly to senior clinical staff or referring departments.
- Coordinating ambulance or transport services for mothers requiring higher-level interventions.
C. Newborn Unit (Postnatal Nursery / Neonatal Care)
Technical Skills
- Performing APGAR scoring immediately after birth and conducting complete newborn assessments.
- Delivering essential newborn care: cord cleaning, maintaining thermal protection, initiating breastfeeding support.
- Monitoring and recording newborn vital signs, weight, and feeding schedules.
- Administering prescribed neonatal medications and vaccines such as BCG, OPV, and Vitamin K.
- Identifying signs of distress in neonates, including jaundice, feeding intolerance, or early sepsis.
- Caring for premature and low birth weight infants using Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC), nasogastric feeding, and thermal regulation techniques.
Operational Skills
- Maintaining a clean, well-organized, and warm environment conducive to newborn health.
- Collaborating closely with pediatricians and neonatologists for advanced newborn care needs.
- Educating mothers on newborn care techniques, signs of complications, and hygiene.
- Documenting newborn care activities and coordinating outpatient follow-up where necessary.
- Promoting exclusive breastfeeding and addressing common challenges such as latching or milk supply issues.
Other Duties
- Performing any additional tasks that may be reasonably assigned by supervisors in line with the scope of nursing and midwifery practice.
Qualifications
Educational Requirements
- KRN, KRM, KRCHN, BSc. Nursing, or Diploma in Advanced Nursing Midwifery from a recognized institution.
Professional Certification
- Valid Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification or Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (EMONC) training.
Licensure
- A current nursing license in good standing, issued by the Nursing Council of Kenya.
Experience
- A minimum of three (3) years post-registration experience in maternity, with demonstrable expertise in both normal and high-risk deliveries.
