As part of its strategic goal to strengthen internal systems and improve governance, LSK is seeking to recruit a highly qualified, motivated, and experienced professional for the position of Director, Internal Audit & Risk, within the Internal Audit Directorate. Position Title: Director, Internal Audit & Risk
Directorate: Internal Audit Directorate
Reporting to: Functionally to the Council through the Audit & Risk Committee, and administratively to the Secretary/Chief Executive Officer
Duty Station: Law Society of Kenya Headquarters, Nairobi
Introduction to the Role
The Director, Internal Audit & Risk, will be tasked with providing independent, objective assurance and consulting services designed to add value and improve the Society’s operations. This will involve a proactive role in evaluating and improving the effectiveness of risk management, control, and governance processes.
The Director will be expected to develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive internal audit plan for the Society. This role demands a high level of integrity, professionalism, and commitment to transparency, as well as excellent analytical and communication skills.
Key Responsibilities
As the head of the Internal Audit Directorate, the Director will be responsible for the following core functions:
1. Audit Strategy and Planning
- Develop a robust risk-based annual internal audit plan that is aligned with the Society’s strategic objectives.
- Ensure the audit plan covers all key risk areas and critical operations of the Society, including financial, operational, compliance, and information technology.
- Review and revise the internal audit plan periodically to address emerging risks and ensure relevance and coverage.
2. Execution of Audit Assignments
- Conduct internal audit assignments in accordance with approved audit plans and international auditing standards.
- Evaluate the adequacy and effectiveness of internal controls, governance, and risk management processes.
- Analyze audit findings, identify root causes of deficiencies, and propose practical and sustainable recommendations.
- Prepare timely and accurate internal audit reports with clear findings and action-oriented recommendations.
3. Risk Management Oversight
- Assist the Audit & Risk Committee and Management in identifying, assessing, and monitoring key risks that may impact the achievement of the Society’s objectives.
- Recommend improvements to the risk management framework and processes to enhance effectiveness.
- Monitor the implementation of risk mitigation strategies and ensure timely reporting on progress to the Audit & Risk Committee.
4. Governance and Compliance
- Evaluate the Society’s compliance with laws, regulations, policies, procedures, and ethical standards.
- Review and assess the effectiveness of governance processes and recommend enhancements where necessary.
- Promote a culture of good corporate governance and compliance throughout the Society.
5. Reporting and Communication
- Submit periodic audit reports to the Audit & Risk Committee of the Council, highlighting key findings, risk exposures, and status of corrective actions.
- Maintain effective communication with the Secretary/Chief Executive Officer and other senior management to ensure collaboration and clarity in audit matters.
- Provide advisory services to management on risk, control, and governance issues.
6. Follow-Up and Monitoring
- Monitor and follow up on the implementation of audit recommendations to ensure timely resolution of identified issues.
- Evaluate the adequacy of corrective actions taken by management and report any residual risks.
7. Leadership and Staff Management
- Lead and manage the Internal Audit team by setting clear goals, providing guidance, coaching, and performance evaluations.
- Foster a culture of professionalism, ethical behavior, and continuous improvement within the directorate.
- Identify and implement staff training and development programs to build and maintain auditing competencies.
8. Stakeholder Engagement
- Serve as a key liaison with external auditors, regulatory bodies, and other relevant stakeholders on matters related to audits and risk management.
- Coordinate with other assurance providers to ensure adequate audit coverage and minimize duplication of efforts.
9. Continuous Improvement and Innovation
- Keep abreast of emerging trends and best practices in internal auditing, risk management, and corporate governance.
- Recommend innovative approaches and use of technology to improve audit efficiency and effectiveness.
