Detailed Job Description: Clinical Nurse – Peponi Executive Clinic
As a Clinical Nurse at Peponi Executive Clinic, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the effective delivery of outpatient medical services. Your daily responsibilities will involve direct patient care, clinical assessments, medical procedures, medication administration, and patient education, with a strong emphasis on quality, safety, and accountability. The clinic serves a broad demographic of patients, including those with medical, surgical, and obstetric/gynecological conditions.
Your key responsibilities will include the following:
1. Patient Assessment and Care Planning
- Conduct comprehensive head-to-toe assessments and re-assessments to determine patient care needs.
- Develop individualized care plans based on initial and ongoing assessments, with measurable goals and timelines.
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions, adjusting plans where necessary for optimal patient outcomes.
2. Clinical Monitoring and Documentation
- Perform hemodynamic monitoring, including regular evaluation of vital signs, neurological status, fluid balance, and reviewing lab and radiological results.
- Ensure all clinical assessments, patient interactions, test results, and care interventions are accurately and promptly documented.
- Maintain proper medical records in accordance with hospital policies and international standards.
3. Medication Management
- Administer medications safely following the hospital’s standard protocols.
- Monitor patient responses to medications and promptly report any adverse reactions to the physician or the clinical supervisor.
4. Infection Prevention and Waste Management
- Adhere to the hospital’s infection control policies to ensure a clean and safe clinical environment.
- Segregate and dispose of clinical and non-clinical waste appropriately, following Aga Khan University Hospital’s waste management guidelines.
5. Medical Procedures and Clinical Support
- Assist physicians during medical examinations and clinical procedures, ensuring patients are well-prepared and informed.
- Provide airway management services including oxygen therapy, nebulization, and suctioning.
- Prepare patients for investigations such as blood work and radiology imaging.
- Collect and label laboratory specimens like urine, stool, and sputum, ensuring accurate documentation.
6. Pain Management and Emergency Response
- Conduct pain assessments and initiate appropriate analgesic treatment as per protocols.
- Recognize early signs of patient deterioration and actively participate in emergency resuscitation procedures.
7. Patient and Family Education
- Identify education needs for both patients and their families.
- Provide clear, compassionate, and informative health education, helping patients to understand their conditions and care plans.
8. Quality and Safety Assurance
- Maintain a safe environment through adherence to safety policies and conducting regular safety checks on clinical equipment.
- Report all clinical and non-clinical incidents promptly to relevant authorities, including the Clinic In-Charge, Operations Manager, or Quality Assurance Manager.
9. Equipment and Inventory Management
- Be responsible for proper use, cleaning, and storage of clinic equipment.
- Conduct regular inventory checks and promptly report faulty or non-functional equipment.
10. Discharge and Follow-Up Planning
- Guide patients through the discharge process, providing necessary instructions and ensuring that follow-up appointments are scheduled.
11. Mentorship and Staff Development
- Assist in the orientation of newly hired nurses.
- Support and mentor junior staff to foster a culture of continuous learning and clinical excellence.
12. Participation in Educational and Quality Initiatives
- Engage in continuous professional development through internal nursing education programs.
- Contribute to quality improvement (QI) initiatives, audits, skills assessments, and clinical spot checks.
13. Inter-Clinic Support
- Provide assistance to other outreach clinics during periods of low patient volume at the primary location.
14. Mental Health Support
- Conduct mental status examinations for psychiatry patients attending the clinic, ensuring appropriate documentation and referrals.
15. Other Responsibilities
- Undertake additional duties as assigned by the Clinic In-Charge, Quality Assurance Manager, or Operations Manager, as needed.
Minimum Requirements
To be eligible for this position, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Registered Nurse (RN) qualification from a recognized nursing school or university.
- A valid and current license issued by the Nursing Council of Kenya.
- Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) is mandatory.
- Minimum of three (3) years of continuous clinical experience, particularly in a medical-surgical nursing setting.
- Proven knowledge and understanding of current best practices in outpatient nursing care.
- Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team.
