Position Overview
As a Field Sales Specialist, you will play a pivotal role in driving new business acquisition and expanding DHL Global Forwarding’s footprint in Kenya and across the East African region. Your primary mandate will be to deliver on set sales targets, maintain high levels of customer satisfaction, and identify market opportunities to expand DHL’s freight services.
You will report to the Sales Manager and collaborate closely with other departments to deliver integrated, customer-centric logistics solutions.
Key Responsibilities
1. Customer Relationship Management
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with both new and existing clients to ensure long-term customer loyalty.
- Provide swift responses to customer enquiries and complaints, delivering solutions that exceed expectations.
- Manage a well-defined portfolio of prospective and current clients with a focus on long-term business development.
- Prospect and win new business, focusing on customers within the specified Net Sales threshold.
- Gain insight into customer needs and align DHL solutions to meet those requirements.
- Recommend appropriate logistics solutions using in-depth industry knowledge.
- Build rapport and trust by staying informed about client businesses and their market context.
- Serve as a key liaison, ensuring operational handover and service implementation is seamless and meets client expectations.
2. Business Development and Strategic Sales Planning
- Formulate and execute strategic sales plans to achieve or exceed sales targets and business growth objectives.
- Regularly update and refine target customer lists to reflect market trends and business potential.
- Develop customized offers and presentations that highlight DHL’s value proposition to clients.
- Negotiate service agreements and commercial terms aligned with corporate sales policies and local compliance procedures.
- Ensure all contracts reflect approved credit and payment terms, and consistently follow up to ensure compliance.
3. Market Intelligence and Internal Collaboration
- Keep the Sales Manager and relevant stakeholders updated on key market trends and competitor behavior.
- Leverage internal networks across DHL Sales channels and departments to support customer needs holistically.
- Participate in cross-functional collaboration initiatives to drive cohesive strategy and efficient service delivery.
- Maintain excellent working relationships with colleagues from Operations, Customer Service, and Finance.
4. Sales Execution and Performance Reporting
- Plan, execute, and document high-quality sales calls with prospective and current clients.
- Actively pursue new and additional business from existing accounts to achieve business growth targets.
- Secure and compile essential client information for internal assessments, including creditworthiness and service scope.
- Support the receivables function by providing accurate financial documentation and client records.
- Document all activities, meetings, quotations, and calls through the company’s CRM platform for transparency and performance tracking.
- Comply with company policies, procedures, and operating instructions across all activities.
- Ensure customer commitments are accurately communicated and implemented by relevant departments.
What We Are Looking For
To succeed in this role, you must be a highly motivated, results-driven professional with a proven track record in sales and business development within logistics, freight forwarding, or a related service industry. You should possess strong commercial acumen, excellent communication skills, and a deep understanding of supply chain dynamics.
Required Experience and Competencies:
- A minimum of 3 to 5 years of relevant experience in transport, logistics, or freight forwarding industries.
- Demonstrated experience in sales and business development within freight forwarding or customs clearing environments.
- Deep understanding of airfreight, ocean freight, road freight, customs clearing, imports/exports, and international trade.
- Proven success in customer acquisition and building long-term commercial partnerships.
- Outstanding communication and negotiation skills with a strong customer-focused orientation.
- A thorough understanding of the sales cycle and an ability to drive results under pressure.
- Knowledge of credit management and financial analysis as it relates to customer onboarding.
- Excellent command of English; multilingual capabilities are a distinct advantage.
- High proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Familiarity with using Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tools for activity tracking and lead management.
- A relevant business degree from a recognized institution.
