Key Responsibilities
The LCL Business Development Specialist will be responsible for managing and developing the Less than Container Load (LCL) freight product across the country, ensuring excellent service delivery, strategic customer engagement, and sustainable business growth.
1. LCL Product Management and Development
- Manage the complete administration process for the LCL development cycle from end to end.
- Serve as the LCL product expert supporting business development, sales, and contracting processes.
- Engage directly with clients, including onsite visits, to understand their freight requirements and offer tailored LCL solutions.
- Develop area-specific LCL solutions based on customer and market needs within Kenya and East Africa.
- Generate and manage lead pipelines and contribute to the sales force enhancement strategy.
- Provide insights and feedback for network development from a country-level perspective.
- Conduct customer mapping and profiling in key trade lanes and identify high-potential targets.
- Maintain regular engagement with customers to identify growth opportunities and expand trade lanes.
2. Customer Engagement and Sales Coordination
- Prioritize top customers and develop customized action plans for each.
- Identify and engage new business opportunities through proactive solution development.
- Collaborate with product teams—both origin and destination—to create and refine customer-centric LCL offerings.
- Lead the onboarding process for new customers, including meetings, calls, and solution orientation.
- Establish and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for each account.
- Ensure timely execution of onboarding timelines and meet internal and external deadlines.
- Document every business win with a comprehensive business case and share with relevant product managers.
3. Operational Excellence and Continuous Improvement
- Improve the performance and scope of existing LCL products to maximize efficiency and customer satisfaction.
- Resolve escalated customer issues with urgency and professionalism.
- Conduct regular market research and analyze industry trends to identify innovative opportunities.
- Collaborate closely with the Sales team and Product Head to align goals and tactics.
- Coordinate inbound and outbound shipment volumes through monthly performance reviews.
- Optimize utilization of own-box services to improve operational costs.
- Generate local tariffs to support Sales in pricing and quoting processes.
- Revamp existing procedures for improved effectiveness and scalability.
- Increase nomination and routing capabilities by targeting strategic trade lanes.
4. Co-Loader and Container Freight Station (CFS) Operations
- Maintain and regularly review regional tariffs with preferred vendors.
- Evaluate the cost-benefit and performance of CFS agreements.
- Control costs through efficient use of own box and co-load operations.
- Select appropriate carriers based on service and routing needs, ensuring reliability and cost-efficiency.
5. Tender and RFQ Management
- Support tender pricing and inside pricing activities to ensure competitiveness.
- Manage RFQs effectively in collaboration with the Ocean Carrier Contracts (OCC) team.
- Ensure up-to-date maintenance and accuracy of the Management Transport System (MTS).
- Review procurement processes and recommend areas for improvement.
- Provide timely market intelligence to support pricing strategies and product positioning.
6. Relationship Management and Quality Assurance
- Lead internal and external audits related to LCL product operations to maintain compliance and improve service standards.
- Build and maintain long-term relationships with customers by offering dependable support and customized logistics solutions.
- Manage the launch of new services, including internal rollout and customer communication.
- Document the product development lifecycle, ensuring knowledge-sharing and cross-functional learning.
Desired Competencies and Experience
- Deep understanding of Ocean Freight LCL products and the broader forwarding business.
- Proven analytical ability and structured problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
- Strong time management and attention to detail with the ability to deliver accurate results under deadlines.
- Experience in structuring logistics solutions for customer needs.
- Familiarity with LCL box deconsolidation processes is an added advantage.
- Minimum 2–3 years of experience in a related field within logistics or freight forwarding.
- A completed matric (high school) certificate.
- Experience with CargoWise system is preferred.
