The Aga Khan Health Service, Kenya (AKHS, K) is seeking a dynamic and experienced professional to serve as the Medical Officer In Charge at the Aga Khan Medical Centre in Kitale, a key component of the Outreach Health Services under the Aga Khan Hospital, Kisumu (AKHK).

Position Overview: Medical Officer In Charge – Aga Khan Medical Centre, Kitale
The Medical Officer In Charge will report to the Head of Outreach and will serve as both a senior clinical officer and administrative head of the Kitale Centre. This dual-function role encompasses direct patient care, medical leadership, staff supervision, operations management, and quality improvement.
This position is ideal for a passionate medical professional who has demonstrable leadership capacity, excellent communication skills, and the ability to manage a growing health facility.
Key Responsibilities
1. Clinical Leadership and Patient Management
- Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, diagnoses, and treatment plans in accordance with clinical guidelines.
- Perform a variety of investigative and therapeutic procedures within the scope of primary and ambulatory care.
- Conduct minor outpatient procedures as required.
- Reassess patients and make referrals to specialists or higher-level facilities when appropriate to optimize patient care.
- Maintain the highest standards of confidentiality and patient privacy in line with AKHS policies.
2. Operational and Administrative Oversight
- Take full responsibility for the day-to-day management and operations of the Kitale Medical Centre.
- Ensure all clinical and administrative processes run efficiently, with a focus on delivering excellent patient experience.
- Provide leadership and mentorship to the clinical and support staff, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional growth.
- Supervise and evaluate the performance of medical and administrative staff to ensure service quality and adherence to AKHS standards.
- Work closely with the Head of Outreach and senior management to implement operational policies and procedures that align with the organisation’s goals and values.
3. Monitoring, Reporting, and Continuous Improvement
- Collect, analyze, and present monthly or quarterly reports on key performance indicators of the medical centre.
- Lead quality improvement initiatives and take part in periodic audits to enhance healthcare outcomes and patient satisfaction.
- Actively address patient feedback, complaints, and concerns in a timely, empathetic, and professional manner.
- Support strategic initiatives to grow the facility’s service offerings and outreach in Kitale and its surrounding areas.
4. Stakeholder and Community Engagement
- Build and maintain relationships with community health actors, local government health officials, and other stakeholders to enhance collaboration and referrals.
- Represent the Medical Centre in local health forums and contribute to broader outreach programme objectives.
- Identify opportunities for partnerships, medical camps, and community-based interventions to boost public health impact.
Candidate Requirements
- Medical degree (M.B.Ch.B or equivalent) from a recognized institution.
- Must be registered and licensed by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.
- Minimum of two years’ experience in a similar medical officer or supervisory role, preferably in a private or not-for-profit health setting.
- Demonstrated experience in clinical management, operations, and team supervision.
- Knowledge and practical competency in emergency procedures such as ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support), ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support), or related certifications will be an added advantage.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
- A proactive and results-oriented approach to healthcare delivery and facility administration.
