Position Title: Patient Transfer and Attendance Staff
Job Summary:
The Patient Transfer and Attendance Staff is responsible for supporting patient mobility, ensuring their comfort and safety, and performing a wide range of auxiliary health services. The position also requires driving and accompanying patients to external medical or therapeutic appointments using hospital-provided vehicles. The role supports healthcare staff by offering direct non-medical care and contributing to a positive, safe, and healing environment for all patients.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Patient Care Assistance:
- Assist patients with basic activities of daily living such as feeding, bathing, grooming, toileting, and dressing.
- Provide mobility support including helping patients move from beds to wheelchairs or to walking aids.
- Monitor patient comfort and provide reassurance and emotional support as necessary.
- Ensure that patients are treated with dignity and respect in all interactions.
- Observe patients for changes in condition, mood, or behavior and report any concerns to nursing or clinical staff promptly.
2. Transportation of Patients:
- Drive patients safely to scheduled appointments, therapy sessions, referrals, or other healthcare-related destinations using hospital-assigned vehicles.
- Ensure strict adherence to safety protocols during patient transfers, including appropriate securing and supervision during transport.
- Conduct routine checks on assigned hospital vehicles to ensure cleanliness, fuel availability, mechanical condition, and readiness for travel.
- Log trip details, distances, and any incidents during patient transport according to hospital policies.
3. Bed Making and Room Maintenance:
- Make patient beds and ensure rooms are clean, organized, and conducive to healing.
- Assist in maintaining hygiene in patient rooms and ward surroundings, including disposing of waste materials safely.
- Report any damages or maintenance needs observed in patient areas to housekeeping or maintenance teams.
- Provide support to housekeeping staff during routine cleaning activities, especially where patient cooperation is required.
4. Support During Therapeutic Activities and Out-of-Hospital Procedures:
- Escort and supervise patients during scheduled activities such as occupational therapy, recreational therapy, and other structured programs.
- Provide monitoring and assistance to patients during external hospital procedures or specialist appointments.
- Encourage patient participation in group activities and provide motivational support as guided by therapists or clinical coordinators.
- Maintain patient safety and compliance throughout external engagements and return journeys.
5. Patient Observation and Safety Monitoring:
- Maintain close observation of patients especially those at risk of self-harm, harm to others, or absconding from the facility.
- Prevent elopement or absconding incidents through active engagement, surveillance, and quick intervention.
- Collaborate with clinical teams to implement behavior monitoring protocols and safety strategies.
- Participate in patient de-escalation techniques where necessary and assist in physical restraint procedures strictly according to hospital policy and safety guidelines.
- Monitor patients during high-risk times such as medication administration, visiting hours, and shift transitions.
6. Documentation:
- Maintain accurate and timely records of patient interactions, support activities, behavioral incidents, and safety observations.
- Record vital signs or other patient-related data as instructed by healthcare professionals.
- Log all patient transport activities including pickup times, destinations, return times, and any notable occurrences.
- Prepare incident reports and submit them promptly to the designated supervisor.
Key Requirements:
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Completion of high school education and patient attendance certification.
- Minimum of two years’ experience working in a psychiatric hospital or mental health facility.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to relate to patients from diverse backgrounds.
- High level of patience, empathy, and personal resilience.
- Capability to handle stressful or emotionally charged situations with professionalism and calm.
