This team plays a pivotal role in ensuring the company maintains its repayment performance, customer satisfaction, and financial viability.

The Credit Risk & Collections team is committed to leveraging data-driven insights and operational expertise to support customer-facing teams, design innovative credit strategies, and continuously improve the customer credit journey.

Position Overview: Credit Manager – Kenya

Job Location: Nairobi, Kenya
Reporting To: Kenya OpCo Managing Director (MD)

The Credit Manager for the Kenya operation is a crucial role that supports the sales, customer experience, aftersales, and field collections teams. The role involves overseeing field collection activities, contributing to strategy design and execution, managing credit-related projects, and working closely with cross-functional teams to meet and exceed credit risk and collection targets.

The role requires a professional with a deep understanding of the PAYGO sector, strong data and operational acumen, and the ability to lead initiatives that drive repayment performance and reduce credit risk.

Key Responsibilities

The Credit Manager’s duties are both strategic and operational in nature, covering a wide range of credit management activities. Key responsibilities include:

  1. Strategic Credit Management Support
    • Assist customer-facing departments such as Sales, Customer Experience, Field Collections, and Aftersales in implementing and refining their credit strategies.
    • Ensure that all activities are aligned with company targets related to credit risk and collection performance.
  2. Implementation of Credit Operations Improvements
    • Design, manage, and implement improvements in credit risk assessment, monitoring, and management practices.
    • Lead key initiatives, develop documentation, drive rollout plans, and oversee field execution.
    • Measure the effectiveness of credit initiatives against defined KPIs and success metrics.
  3. Cross-functional Coordination and Support
    • Provide hands-on support to the Kenya OpCo Managing Director and departmental heads.
    • Guide management in the ongoing development and improvement of credit-related processes.
    • Ensure cross-team collaboration and information sharing to promote credit discipline across all customer touchpoints.
  4. Training and Capacity Building
    • Work with training managers to create tailored training plans, procedural documents, and learning materials.
    • Support the delivery of credit best-practices training to field teams, call center staff, and other relevant personnel.
  5. Field Collections Oversight
    • Take operational responsibility for the Field Collections function within Kenya.
    • Provide guidance and day-to-day management support to field staff to ensure effective collections and customer winback efforts.
  6. Performance Monitoring and Reporting
    • Prepare and deliver regular updates and performance reports for internal stakeholders including the Kenya MD, Global Credit Operations Manager, and Director of Credit Risk & Collections.
    • Use insights from reports to inform and adjust credit strategies in real time.
  7. Technology and Data Tool Rollout Support
    • Assist in deploying new technological tools, dashboards, and data systems for the field collections team.
    • Provide practical feedback to improve systems and ensure usability in real-world field conditions.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

The Credit Manager will be accountable for driving performance across several key metrics that reflect the effectiveness of the credit and collections strategy:

  • Early Risk: Proactively identifying and mitigating risk signals in the early stages of the customer journey.
  • Usage Rate: Monitoring customer engagement and system usage to anticipate payment behavior.
  • Portfolio at Risk (PAR): Managing the overall credit health of the customer portfolio.
  • % Paid at Milestones: Ensuring timely payments according to customer repayment schedules.
  • Winback Rate: Successfully re-engaging and recovering customers who have defaulted or stopped making payments.
  • Cash Collected: Maximizing revenue collection while ensuring customer satisfaction and retention.

Required Skills and Experience

Candidates for the Credit Manager role should bring a strong blend of operational expertise, analytical skills, and interpersonal ability. The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following:

  • At least 5 years of experience in the PAYGO or similar industry with a focus on credit management, collections, or last-mile distribution.
  • Demonstrated success in managing complex projects and delivering results in dynamic environments.
  • Ability to work across multiple departments and lead cross-functional initiatives.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to coordinate with diverse teams.
  • Proficiency in using digital productivity tools, especially Google Slides, Docs, and Sheets.
  • Capability to work independently, make decisions under pressure, and manage competing priorities.
  • Strong field orientation and readiness to travel for operational support and performance evaluation within Kenya and potentially across other d.light operating countries.
  • Fluency in both English and Swahili is essential.
  • A formal qualification or degree related to finance, business, or operations is an advantage but not a strict requirement.
