The position of Slitting Line Operator has been announced for immediate recruitment. Job Description

The Slitting Line Operator will play a critical role in ensuring the accurate and efficient slitting of steel coils into narrower strips based on specified job orders. The operator will be responsible for the setup, operation, adjustment, inspection, and monitoring of the slitting line, which includes multiple complex components and systems.

This role demands a high degree of mechanical skill, process control awareness, safety consciousness, and quality orientation. The ideal candidate must be capable of working in a fast-paced industrial environment, managing multiple production requirements while upholding the highest standards of accuracy and safety.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Setup and Configuration:
    • Prepare the slitting line for production based on the day’s job order specifications.
    • Install and align slitting knives, spacers, and separator discs with precision to meet width tolerances and customer requirements.
    • Calibrate uncoiler, tension stand, slitting head, and rewind mandrels for optimal performance.
    • Adjust machine settings including line speed, knife clearance, and tension control to suit varying coil materials and thicknesses.
  2. Slitting Operation:
    • Operate the complete slitting line including feeding, slitting, and recoiling of steel coils.
    • Monitor process continuously to ensure slit width accuracy, edge quality, and consistency.
    • Make real-time adjustments to counter any operational deviation or quality issue.
    • Ensure neat, tight, and wrinkle-free recoiling of the slit strips.
  3. Quality and Inspection:
    • Perform pre- and post-slitting inspections on the material for physical defects such as edge burrs, scratches, camber, and incorrect width.
    • Ensure only defect-free products proceed to storage or dispatch.
    • Communicate immediately with the QC/QA team when non-conformances are detected, and support them in implementing corrective actions.
    • Accurately label, weigh, and band slit coils for traceability and proper warehousing.
  4. Process Optimization and Documentation:
    • Log all production parameters, observations, and variations in the process records.
    • Maintain up-to-date records for each coil processed including traceability logs and production output reports.
    • Report and document any tool wear, machine downtime, coil rejection, or abnormalities during the shift.
    • Ensure orderly execution of job orders, minimizing material loss and time wastage.
  5. Safety and Equipment Maintenance:
    • Comply fully with all plant safety policies including the lockout/tagout procedures before performing any maintenance or line adjustment.
    • Conduct daily and periodic inspection of the slitting equipment, ensuring all safety guards are intact and systems are functional.
    • Perform basic cleaning and lubrication of the slitting machine and related parts to prevent premature wear or failure.
    • Assist the maintenance team during planned or emergency breakdowns, providing operational insights to facilitate repairs.
  6. Shift Coordination and Reporting:
    • Actively participate in shift handovers by providing detailed reports on machine performance, output status, and pending tasks.
    • Coordinate with other production and support teams to ensure uninterrupted operations.
    • Maintain accurate documentation of coil usage, scrap accounting, and consumable tracking.
  7. Scrap Handling and Waste Control:
    • Trim and remove scrap using designated equipment such as scrap choppers and automatic winders.
    • Ensure scrap materials are collected, separated, and reported according to company guidelines.
    • Strive to minimize process waste through accurate setup, timely adjustments, and continuous monitoring.
  8. Compliance and Best Practices:
    • Apply 6S (Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain, and Safety) principles in day-to-day activities.
    • Support autonomous maintenance activities by monitoring machine condition and promptly reporting unusual behavior.
    • Adhere to company policies on quality, environmental protection, and occupational health and safety.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education: Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE)
  • Certification: Government Grade Test Three in General Fitting
  • Technical Knowledge:
    • Proficient understanding of mechanical operations, precision alignment, and material properties.
    • Familiarity with 6S methodology and basic autonomous maintenance concepts is essential.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of one (1) year hands-on experience operating a slitting line.
    • Additional 1–3 years of experience in a manufacturing or industrial setting will be an added advantage.
