Job Purpose
The Oncology Nurse will be responsible for delivering specialized nursing services to cancer patients, while also contributing to the advancement of clinical research and continuous professional training in the field of oncology. The successful candidate will provide critical support in managing patients undergoing chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and other oncology treatments, ensuring that the care delivered is comprehensive, evidence-based, and patient-focused.
This role calls for a compassionate professional who can address the physical, emotional, and psychological needs of cancer patients, educate patients and families on disease processes and self-care, and work in tandem with a multidisciplinary care team to ensure optimal outcomes.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
As part of the oncology unit, the Oncology Nurse will be tasked with the following core responsibilities:
- Patient-Centered Care Planning:
Develop and implement individualized care plans for each patient, aligned with the diagnosis, stage of cancer, treatment goals, and patient preferences. - Recognition and Management of Cancer-Related Issues:
Identify, assess, and treat issues directly or indirectly related to cancer, including pain management, fatigue, infection control, and nutritional challenges. - Monitoring Patient Needs:
Perform continuous assessments of physical, emotional, and psychological status, adapting care strategies as necessary to meet evolving needs. - Treatment Administration:
Administer prescribed chemotherapy, immunotherapy, hormonal therapy, and other oncology interventions with precision, ensuring strict adherence to safety protocols and dosage guidelines. - Managing Treatment Side Effects:
Proactively manage and treat side effects associated with chemotherapy and other therapies, such as nausea, hair loss, immunosuppression, and neuropathy. - Diagnostic Interpretation and Clinical Decision Making:
Interpret lab and diagnostic results including liver function tests (LFTs), renal profiles, blood counts, bone scans, radiological and histopathological findings to inform treatment decisions and patient monitoring. - Emergency Care Response:
Deliver basic and advanced emergency care to oncology patients experiencing acute or critical events, such as anaphylaxis or febrile neutropenia, in line with hospital protocols. - Cancer Awareness and Prevention:
Participate in internal and community-based cancer prevention initiatives, including education, awareness campaigns, and early screening programs. - Patient and Family Education:
Educate patients and their caregivers on disease progression, treatment expectations, side effect management, and techniques for home-based care and self-monitoring. - Research Participation and Evidence-Based Practice:
Contribute to nursing and clinical research efforts aimed at improving patient care standards within the oncology unit. Apply new knowledge and clinical guidelines to everyday nursing practices. - Collaboration with Multidisciplinary Team:
Work collaboratively with oncologists, surgeons, radiologists, pharmacists, nutritionists, and psychosocial support professionals in care planning and case management. - Maintaining Clinical Documentation:
Ensure timely and accurate documentation of all nursing assessments, procedures, medication administration, patient progress, and any deviations in care or clinical outcomes. - Workplace Safety and Infection Control:
Uphold stringent infection prevention and control measures within the unit to safeguard patients and staff, especially given the immunocompromised state of most cancer patients. - Continued Professional Development:
Stay informed of emerging trends and innovations in oncology nursing, attending relevant training sessions, workshops, and professional development forums.
Minimum Requirements and Qualifications
To be considered for this position, applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:
- A Diploma or Degree in Nursing from a recognized institution.
- Higher Diploma in Oncology Nursing from an accredited institution.
- Registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya.
- Holder of a valid and current Practice License as an Oncology Nurse.
- Certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS).
- Proficiency in the use of hospital management systems and computer applications related to healthcare.
- At least one (1) year of hands-on experience as an Oncology Nurse in a reputable healthcare facility.
