Library Assistant – KSL 8

Position: 1 Post

Overall Purpose of the Job
The Library Assistant will work under the direction of the Principal Librarian and will play an integral role in the execution of day-to-day library operations. The incumbent will be tasked with facilitating access to legal knowledge resources, supporting library users, and maintaining a well-organized and efficient learning environment.

This position is vital in ensuring that students and academic staff have uninterrupted access to key learning and research materials necessary for legal study and practice.

Duties and Responsibilities
The Library Assistant will assist in the following tasks:

  • Provision of library and information services: Carrying out duties aligned with the School’s approved library strategies, including classification, cataloguing, and reference support.
  • Safeguarding library assets: Implementing control measures and verification mechanisms to ensure proper valuation, maintenance, and ownership tracking of the library’s holdings.
  • Processing of new materials: Stamping, pasting, and accessioning newly acquired print materials to integrate them into the library system.
  • Organization of collections: Managing specific areas such as periodicals, archives, rare books, and special collections, including shelving and arrangement of materials for easy access and retrieval.
  • User support and circulation: Assisting students, faculty, and visitors with circulation services including checking in/out books and responding to inquiries.
  • Stock taking: Participating in regular physical inventory exercises to account for all library resources.

Key Competencies and Attributes
The ideal candidate should have:

  • A strong understanding of library systems and organization.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to provide user-focused service in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Familiarity with cataloguing tools, physical asset management, and modern library software.

Remuneration
The salary for this position falls under KSL 8, with a gross monthly salary range of Kshs. 74,567 to Kshs. 93,112.
