Available Positions and Job Descriptions
1. Department of Environmental and Occupational Health
Kenyatta University is looking to recruit qualified faculty in the areas of environmental and public health, particularly for its growing programmes in health promotion, sanitation, and occupational safety.
1.1 Senior Lecturer
The Senior Lecturer will provide leadership in teaching, curriculum development, and research in any of the following fields: Environmental Health, Water Sanitation and Hygiene, Occupational Safety and Health, Health Promotion, or Health Education. The candidate should have a PhD in a relevant field and hold a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Health or Public Health, and must be registered with the Public Health Officers and Technicians Council. Candidates should have at least three years of university teaching experience as a Lecturer, three publications in refereed journals, supervision of at least three master’s students, and evidence of academic engagement through conferences or workshops.
1.2 Lecturer
The Lecturer will be expected to teach undergraduate and postgraduate students, supervise research projects, and contribute to academic scholarship. The suitable candidate should hold a PhD in Environmental Health, Water Sanitation and Hygiene, Occupational Health, Population Health, Demography, Reproductive Health, Health Promotion, or Health Education. The role requires at least three years of experience in teaching, research, or industry; two publications in refereed journals; and academic engagement through seminars and workshops. Registration with the relevant professional councils is required.
1.3 Tutorial Fellow
The Tutorial Fellow will support teaching and learning activities while preparing for doctoral studies. Applicants must possess a Master’s degree in Health Promotion, Health Education, Population Health, Reproductive Health, Medical Demography, Biostatistics, or Environmental Health. A Bachelor’s degree in a related field and registration with the relevant regulatory bodies are required. PhD enrollment will be considered an added advantage.
2. Department of Community Health and Reproductive Health Nursing
This department is seeking skilled academic staff to support its programs in Mental Health & Psychiatry and Oncology Nursing.
2.1 Lecturer
This role requires a PhD in Mental Health & Psychiatry Nursing or Oncology Nursing, supported by a Master’s degree in the same specialization. The applicant must hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN), have at least three years of university-level teaching experience, and present a record of two refereed journal publications. The candidate must be registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) and possess a valid practicing license.
2.2 Clinical Instructor
The Clinical Instructor will support practical training for nursing students and must possess a BScN. A Master’s degree in Midwifery, Oncology, or Mental and Psychiatry Nursing is an added advantage. Applicants should have at least three years’ experience in a referral, teaching, or research hospital, and must be registered with NCK with a valid license. Computer literacy is essential for this role.
3. Department of Medical Surgical Nursing and Pre-Clinical Sciences
The department invites applications for positions that require specialized knowledge in advanced areas of nursing practice.
Lecturer
Applicants must have a PhD in any of the following specializations: Critical Care, Nephrology Nursing, Advanced Nursing Practice, Medical-Surgical Nursing, Emergency & Trauma Nursing, Nurse Anaesthetist, or Nursing Leadership. A Master’s degree in the above areas, a BScN, and registration with the Nursing Council of Kenya are mandatory. Candidates must also show evidence of two refereed journal publications and have at least three years of teaching, research, or clinical nursing experience.
4. Department of Special Surgeries
This department is looking for experts in various dental and oral health disciplines.
Lecturer
Applicants must hold a Master of Dental Surgery in Prosthodontics, Periodontology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Paediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics, Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine, Endodontics, Dental Materials, Oral Biology, or Head and Neck Radiology. A Bachelor’s degree in Dental Surgery, registration with the relevant regulatory body, and a valid license are mandatory. Candidates must also have three years of teaching, research, or industry experience and two refereed journal publications.
5. Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health
This department seeks senior academic leaders with specialized qualifications in psychiatry and public health.
5.1 Professor
The Professor will lead postgraduate teaching, supervise doctoral research, and spearhead grant acquisition. Applicants must possess a PhD in Medicine or Public Health and an MMed in Psychiatry. They should have served as an Associate Professor for at least three years, published five refereed journal articles during that period, supervised five postgraduate students (two at doctoral level), and participated in grant-funded research. Registration with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) and a valid practicing license are mandatory.
5.2 Associate Professor
Applicants must have a PhD in Medicine or Public Health and an MMed in Psychiatry. A minimum of three years as a Senior Lecturer, four refereed journal publications, and successful supervision of four postgraduate students (one at PhD level) are required. Applicants should also demonstrate involvement in grant-funded research. Registration with KMPDC and a valid license are essential.
5.3 Senior Lecturer
Applicants must have a PhD in Medicine or Public Health, an MMed in Psychiatry, and at least three years of teaching or research experience as a Lecturer. Additional requirements include three refereed publications, supervision of three postgraduate students, and valid registration with KMPDC.
6. Department of Literature, Linguistics & Foreign Languages
This department is expanding its foreign languages offering and requires staff with specialization in German.
6.1 Lecturer
Applicants should hold a PhD in German Language from a recognized university. The position requires at least three years of teaching, research, or industry experience, two refereed publications, and evidence of academic engagement through conferences or seminars.
6.2 Tutorial Fellow
Applicants must have a Master’s degree in German Language and be willing to pursue a PhD in the field. Previous university teaching experience and registration in a PhD programme will be considered an added advantage.
Terms of Service
Kenyatta University offers a competitive remuneration package that includes basic salary, house allowance, and medical cover as per the university’s staff scheme. Tutorial Fellows will be engaged on a one-year renewable contract, up to a maximum of three years, subject to satisfactory performance.
