The University, through its School of Medicine, is seeking to recruit a team of visionary, competent, and experienced lecturers across a number of medical specializations. The appointments are full-time and offer successful candidates a chance to contribute to shaping the next generation of medical professionals while furthering their own research and academic careers in an intellectually stimulating environment.

Mount Kenya University invites applications for Lecturer positions in the following specializations:

  • Physiology (2 Positions)
  • Pediatrics (1 Position)
  • Obstetrics & Gynecology (1 Position)
  • Internal Medicine (1 Position)
  • General Surgery (2 Positions)
  • ENT – Ear, Nose and Throat (1 Position)
  • Ophthalmology (1 Position)
  • Anesthesia (1 Position)
  • Diagnostic Imaging (1 Position)
  • Psychiatry (3 Positions)

Key Responsibilities for All Lecturer Positions

All lecturers will report to the Dean, School of Medicine and will be responsible for carrying out teaching, research, mentorship, and administrative duties in accordance with the University’s mission. Key responsibilities include:

  1. Teaching and Curriculum Delivery
    • Prepare high-quality teaching materials in line with the approved curriculum for both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
    • Deliver lectures, tutorials, clinical teachings, practical sessions, and seminars in assigned subject areas.
    • Design and implement innovative and effective teaching methodologies tailored to promote active student engagement.
    • Conduct Continuous Assessment Tests (CATs) and final examinations, including their preparation, administration, and marking.
  2. Student Supervision and Academic Advising
    • Guide and mentor students in their academic and career development.
    • Supervise student research projects at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including topic identification, proposal development, data collection, and final thesis writing.
    • Provide academic counseling and ensure student academic records are accurately maintained in the university’s Academic Management System.
  3. Curriculum Development and Review
    • Actively participate in curriculum development and periodic review processes to ensure relevance, compliance with professional standards, and incorporation of emerging scientific knowledge.
    • Integrate best practices and up-to-date research findings into course content to promote evidence-based medical education.
  4. Research and Scholarly Activities
    • Undertake independent and collaborative research projects in their area of specialization.
    • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at academic and professional conferences.
    • Seek and secure research grants and funding from national and international funding bodies.
    • Collaborate with faculty colleagues and external institutions to develop a strong research and innovation culture within the School of Medicine.
  5. Community Engagement and Professional Contribution
    • Participate in medical outreach programs and other community service initiatives that align with the university’s social responsibility mandate.
    • Engage in continuous professional development activities and uphold ethical practices and academic integrity.
    • Represent the university in professional associations, conferences, workshops, and seminars.
  6. Administrative Responsibilities
    • Serve on departmental, school, and university committees as appointed.
    • Provide leadership in academic programs and participate in strategic planning and development.
    • Support the school in accreditation processes, quality assurance activities, and academic audits.
    • Contribute to the development and implementation of policies that promote academic excellence and institutional growth.

Position-Specific Responsibilities and Expectations

1. Physiology (2 Positions)
Responsible for delivering core courses in human physiology, conducting laboratory practicals, and mentoring students in foundational biomedical science. Candidates should demonstrate capability in teaching systems physiology and supporting students in physiological research.

2. Pediatrics (1 Position)
The role involves teaching clinical pediatrics and supervising students in pediatric rotations in hospital settings. Candidates must have experience in managing common pediatric conditions and should support student learning with real-life clinical case discussions.

3. Obstetrics & Gynecology (1 Position)
The successful applicant will be involved in teaching both theoretical and practical aspects of reproductive health, managing obstetric emergencies, and conducting community-based reproductive health projects.

4. Internal Medicine (1 Position)
This position entails teaching internal medicine subjects, supervising hospital clerkships, and contributing to research in adult disease diagnosis and management.

5. General Surgery (2 Positions)
Lecturers will train students on surgical principles, assist with surgical skills labs, and oversee clinical rotations in affiliated hospitals. Experience in general surgical procedures and trauma management is required.

6. ENT – Ear, Nose and Throat (1 Position)
The lecturer will teach ENT pathology and procedures, guide students during ENT rotations, and facilitate workshops on diagnostic techniques such as audiometry and endoscopy.

7. Ophthalmology (1 Position)
Responsibilities include instruction in eye anatomy and diseases, mentorship in clinical skills such as fundoscopy, and supervision during ophthalmology rotations.

8. Anesthesia (1 Position)
Duties include teaching pharmacology and techniques of anesthesia, supporting simulation labs for anesthesia induction and monitoring, and supervising students in surgical theatres.

9. Diagnostic Imaging (1 Position)
The role involves training students on medical imaging principles, including X-rays, ultrasound, CT and MRI, and overseeing student rotations in radiology departments.

10. Psychiatry (3 Positions)
Successful candidates will teach psychiatry, mentor students during mental health rotations, and lead academic discussions on psychiatric disorders, therapy, and ethics in mental healthcare.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must have:

  • A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in the relevant area of specialization from a recognized academic institution,
    OR
  • A Master of Medicine (MMed) in the relevant area of specialization from a recognized academic institution.

In addition:

  • Possess a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree.
  • Be registered and licensed to practice by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.
