Job Title: Oncology Nurse
Reports To: Oncology In-Charge

Job Purpose
The Oncology Nurse plays a crucial role in supporting the treatment and care of cancer patients at Premier Hospital. The incumbent will be responsible for administering chemotherapy and other treatments, providing emotional and psychological support to patients and their families, monitoring patient progress, and engaging in ongoing clinical training and research to improve care delivery in the oncology unit.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement individualized care plans for cancer patients based on physician directives and patient needs.
  • Identify, assess, and treat cancer-related health issues including the management of treatment side effects.
  • Conduct regular physical, emotional, and psychological assessments of oncology patients and take appropriate clinical actions.
  • Administer chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and other specialized oncology treatments as per physician prescriptions and established protocols.
  • Accurately document patient progress, responses to treatment, and any notable changes in condition to maintain comprehensive and up-to-date medical records.
  • Recognize and manage the side effects associated with chemotherapy and other oncology treatments.
  • Take part in cancer prevention and early detection initiatives within the hospital and the wider community.
  • Perform detailed health assessments to identify deviations from normal and implement timely interventions.
  • Analyze and interpret diagnostic results including laboratory tests, imaging, and biopsy reports to guide clinical decisions.
  • Provide immediate emergency care when necessary, following oncology-specific emergency protocols.
  • Collaborate with other departments and disciplines to ensure patients receive integrated and continuous care.
  • Educate patients and their caregivers about cancer diagnoses, treatment plans, expected side effects, and self-care at home.
  • Participate in research initiatives to promote evidence-based practice within the oncology unit.
  • Attend and contribute to multidisciplinary care meetings and case discussions.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and supportive environment conducive to healing and emotional well-being.
  • Keep abreast of the latest developments in oncology treatments, nursing care standards, and best practices.

Minimum Requirements / Qualifications

  • Diploma or Degree in Nursing from a recognized institution.
  • Higher Diploma in Oncology Nursing from a reputable training center.
  • Must be registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya and possess a valid practice license.
  • Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
  • Proficient in using computer systems and hospital information systems.
  • A minimum of one (1) year experience working in an oncology nursing role within a reputable healthcare facility.
