Position: Driver / Auto-Mechanic
Location: Nova Pioneer Athi River Campus
Start Date: August 2025

Role Overview

The Driver / Auto-Mechanic will be responsible for the daily transportation of students to and from school and events, as well as the mechanical servicing, diagnostics, and upkeep of the school’s fleet. The role reports directly to the Transport Manager and plays a crucial part in ensuring Nova Pioneer’s transport operations meet safety, efficiency, and quality standards.

This dual-role position requires exceptional driving discipline and technical skill in vehicle diagnostics and maintenance. The successful candidate will also be expected to embrace and embody the Nova Pioneer culture of responsibility, professionalism, and continual improvement.

Key Responsibilities

1. Safe and Efficient Student Transportation

  • Operate school vehicles in full compliance with road traffic laws, school policies, and safety protocols.
  • Maintain strict adherence to the “door-to-door” student drop-off and pick-up policy.
  • Follow the assigned route and schedule, ensuring punctuality and reliability.
  • Work collaboratively with the bus assistant to manage student behavior and maintain order during transit.
  • Carry out daily vehicle inspections for safety and report any irregularities or defects.
  • Observe all road safety signs and speed limits diligently.
  • Keep accurate records of mileage, destinations, and travel logs.
  • Fuel vehicles as per the school’s fueling schedule and monitor fuel usage.
  • Safely transport students to field trips, sports meets, and other school-related events.
  • Notify the Transport Manager immediately in case of accidents, delays, detours, or road hazards.
  • Ensure vehicle cleanliness and secure parking both on and off campus.
  • Make sure all students are on board before commencing travel and reinforce safety regulations among all passengers.
  • Maintain respectful, courteous, and professional behavior while interacting with students, staff, and parents.

2. Auto-Mechanic and Fleet Maintenance Duties

  • Diagnose vehicle faults and mechanical issues using approved tools and methods.
  • Perform test drives and physical inspections to assess vehicle condition and validate repairs.
  • Conduct thorough and accurate mechanical repairs across the vehicle’s key systems, including:
    • Engine and engine cooling systems
    • Braking systems
    • Suspension and steering components
    • Transmission systems
    • Exhaust systems
  • Carry out scheduled routine maintenance including oil changes, fluid checks, tire rotation, and replacements.
  • Maintain comprehensive records for each service or repair in detailed job cards.
  • Provide feedback to the Transport Manager on recurring mechanical issues or needed interventions.
  • Ensure repairs are completed within required timeframes to avoid service interruptions.
  • Maintain the workshop and equipment in clean and safe condition at all times.
  • Assist in transporting staff or students during emergencies and when necessary.
  • Undertake errands or assignments as directed by the Transport Manager.

3. Compliance and Documentation

  • Comply with all policies and procedures stipulated in the Nova Pioneer Transport Policy and Employee Handbook.
  • Ensure all statutory vehicle documentation is valid, including inspection certificates, road licenses, and insurance.
  • Support accurate record-keeping for compliance and audit purposes.
  • Remain updated on new regulations and ensure ongoing compliance with County and National Government transport regulations.

4. Health and Safety Protocols

  • Conduct weekly inspections of vehicles and the transport environment to ensure safety compliance.
  • Participate in the school’s Health and Safety Committee meetings and activities.
  • Implement safety practices in line with Nova Pioneer’s Workplace Health & Safety Protocols.
  • Immediately report safety hazards or issues that cannot be addressed independently.
  • Handle all tools and mechanical equipment in line with manufacturers’ safety guidelines.

5. Team Collaboration and Cultural Fit

6. Operational Excellence and Client Service

  • Respond promptly to feedback from school staff, students, and parents regarding transport services.
  • Monitor service delivery standards and contribute suggestions for improvement.
  • Ensure that all logs, repair documents, and vehicle checklists are updated accurately and timely.
  • Uphold high standards of professionalism and transparency in all transport-related services.
  • Accept and execute any other roles or duties as assigned by the Transport Manager or school leadership.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Diploma in Auto-Mechanical Engineering from a recognized institution.
  • Valid BCE-class Driving License held for at least 8 years.
  • PSV (Public Service Vehicle) License required.
  • Certificate of Good Conduct obtained within the last 6 months.
  • At least 2 years of school transportation experience.
  • Familiarity with school bus regulations and the Kenya Highway Code.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with hands-on experience in vehicle diagnostics and repairs.
  • Knowledge of first aid will be an added advantage.
  • Excellent verbal communication, time management, and interpersonal skills.
  • Client-service oriented with the ability to handle pressure and unexpected situations.
  • Strong work ethic, integrity, and attention to detail.
  • Three verifiable references from previous employers in transport or mechanical roles.
