This position plays a vital role in ensuring robust financial reporting practices and compliance with industry standards and regulatory frameworks.
About the Role
The role of the Accountant, Financial Reporting at Jubilee Health Insurance Limited is central to the organization’s financial accountability and regulatory compliance. Reporting to the Manager, Financial Reporting, the position holder will be entrusted with the responsibility of delivering timely, accurate, and comprehensive financial reports. The role calls for an individual who is not only technically sound in financial accounting and reporting but also well-versed in the specific requirements of the insurance industry, including IFRS and IRA compliance.
This role is critical to the smooth operation of the finance department and contributes significantly to internal controls, audit preparedness, financial planning, and tax compliance. The successful candidate will be expected to work collaboratively with various departments to ensure transparent, consistent, and strategic financial management.
Detailed Job Description
1. Financial Reporting & Compliance
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in strict adherence to International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and internal company policies.
- Ensure accurate and prompt submission of financial reports to the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) and any other statutory bodies as required by law.
- Support the implementation of IFRS 17 and other evolving accounting standards applicable to the insurance sector.
- Keep abreast of changes in financial reporting requirements, ensuring that the company’s financial reporting practices remain compliant and forward-looking.
2. General Ledger and Period-End Close
- Maintain the general ledger, ensuring its integrity, accuracy, and alignment with all financial activities across the organization.
- Perform monthly and year-end closing activities, including validation and reconciliation of ledger accounts.
- Prepare and post standard monthly journals such as accruals, amortization, depreciation, and provisions to reflect true and fair financial positions.
3. Audit Support
- Prepare accurate audit schedules and supporting documentation in readiness for external and internal audits.
- Serve as a key liaison between auditors and internal departments by coordinating timely responses and provision of required documentation.
- Ensure that all audit findings are resolved and that recommendations are implemented to strengthen financial practices.
4. Budgeting & Forecasting Support
- Actively support the preparation and consolidation of the annual budget and periodic rolling forecasts.
- Analyze financial data to monitor performance against the approved budget, identify variances, and propose corrective actions where necessary.
- Assist in scenario planning and forecast modeling to support strategic financial decisions.
5. Tax & Statutory Returns
- Collaborate with the payment team to ensure accurate preparation and timely submission of statutory tax returns including VAT, PAYE, Withholding Tax (WHT), and income tax.
- Maintain appropriate documentation and ensure strict adherence to current tax legislation and regulatory changes affecting the insurance industry.
- Participate in tax audits and support the resolution of any tax-related queries.
6. Financial Controls & Process Improvement
- Support the implementation and ongoing monitoring of internal financial controls to ensure the reliability and integrity of financial reporting.
- Identify gaps and propose enhancements to financial processes, with a strong focus on automation and efficiency in financial cycles.
- Maintain comprehensive documentation of accounting policies, processes, and control mechanisms for internal consistency and audit readiness.

Academic & Professional Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline from a recognized institution.
- CPA (K) or ACCA certification is mandatory for this position.
Relevant Experience
The ideal candidate must possess at least four (4) years of practical experience in financial reporting or audit, preferably within the insurance or broader financial services industry. A strong command of IFRS and a thorough understanding of regulatory requirements by bodies such as the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) and the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) are essential for success in this role.
