About the Department
The QIRR & OGC department within Deloitte East Africa is responsible for managing potential legal, operational, regulatory, and reputational risks. This involves conducting due diligence, implementing internal compliance frameworks, providing timely advisory, and ensuring alignment with global and regional standards across member firms.
Risk Management is integral to the firm’s mission of delivering consistent, reliable, and responsible service. The GIMS (Global Independence Monitoring System) Service Centre supports this vision by managing the financial independence of Deloitte practitioners, a critical component in compliance with regulatory and firm policies.
Position Overview: Risk Analyst – GIMS Service Centre
The successful candidate will report to the Senior Manager within the QIRR & OGC team and will be instrumental in supporting the Africa Member Firm’s independence compliance. This includes conducting independence reviews, ensuring the accuracy of portfolio data, assisting in policy implementation, and offering timely user support within the GIMS ecosystem.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
The Risk Analyst will undertake a diverse range of tasks that align with Deloitte’s strategic goals and commitment to professional ethics. The core responsibilities are structured under four key performance areas:
1. Strategic Impact
- Assist in executing the GIMS Service Centre strategy as directed by the Director of Independence.
- Support the ongoing development and enforcement of systems of quality control and compliance processes.
- Keep abreast of current independence regulations, global policies, and trends to ensure practitioners across Deloitte Africa remain compliant and informed.
- Contribute to the development and enhancement of risk awareness across member firms.
2. Independence Subject Matter Expertise
- Conduct timely and accurate independence reviews using the Global Independence Monitoring System (GIMS).
- Maintain up-to-date portfolio information for GIMS users and their immediate family members by accurately uploading user-provided holdings and relevant supporting documentation.
- Provide end-user support for GIMS queries, ensuring prompt, courteous, and effective service.
- Identify and escalate any potential breaches of independence protocols to the appropriate team members for immediate action.
- Collaborate with the Senior Manager in resolving outstanding dashboard action items.
- Track, follow up, and escalate non-compliance by individuals failing to meet GIMS-related deadlines.
- Facilitate the accurate and timely enrolment of users into the GIMS platform.
3. Development of Self and Team
- Participate actively in training initiatives and workshops aimed at reinforcing firm-wide understanding of independence and compliance standards.
- Contribute to the design and dissemination of QIRR communications, including Global Mandated Notices and learning materials.
- Collaborate in producing content for presentations, e-learnings, or live training sessions for internal practitioners across Deloitte East Africa.
- Support the team’s effort to foster a culture of compliance, ethics, and continual learning.
4. Operational Excellence and Risk Awareness
- Adhere to internal control procedures, ensuring all work meets quality standards and policy requirements.
- Assist with maintaining proper documentation for audit purposes and policy enforcement.
- Monitor trends, suggest improvements, and provide feedback that may enhance the functionality of GIMS and its integration with regional practices.
- Maintain an organized workflow to manage reviews, queries, escalations, and follow-ups within expected turnaround times.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline such as Finance, Business Administration, Economics, Law, or related fields.
- 1–2 years of relevant work experience, preferably in an audit, compliance, or professional services environment.
- Foundational understanding of independence frameworks in professional services, including regulatory frameworks like IESBA, IFAC, SEC, and PCAOB.
- General familiarity with key financial instruments and investment vehicles such as ISIN numbers, Collective Investment Funds, Securities Accounts, Bonds, ETFs, and Structured Products.
- Prior knowledge of Deloitte’s policy manuals, particularly Manual 1420 on Independence, is an added advantage for internal candidates.
