The position reports directly to the Political Counsellor and Head of Communication and Press Office.
Key Responsibilities
The Social Media and Press Officer will take charge of both strategic and operational communication responsibilities to reinforce the Embassy’s presence in Kenya and Somalia. This dynamic position will involve the following tasks:
1. Communication and Promotion of Embassy Activities
- Design and deliver communication plans to promote the Embassy’s initiatives, including bilateral meetings, cultural events, development cooperation, and public diplomacy.
- Maintain a consistent and positive image of the Embassy and its engagements with Kenyan and Somali partners.
2. Implementation of Communication Strategies
- Contribute to the formulation of communication strategies aligning with the Embassy’s political priorities and target audiences.
- Collaborate with internal departments and external stakeholders to amplify messaging on shared objectives.
3. Press, Media, and Social Media Monitoring
- Conduct daily monitoring of Kenyan, Somali, and international press to stay updated on relevant political, social, and civil society developments.
- Track public discourse, detect emerging trends, and inform Embassy staff of any issues of relevance.
4. Political and Civil Society Developments Monitoring
- Stay abreast of key developments in civil society, especially those related to governance, democracy, gender, youth engagement, and environmental issues.
- Provide summaries and analysis of developments that may affect France’s diplomatic relations in the region.
5. Preparation of Communication Products and Content Creation
- Develop high-quality written and visual content including press releases, web articles, social media posts, speeches, and internal communication materials.
- Ensure that all communication materials reflect the values, priorities, and branding standards of the Embassy.
6. Website and Social Media Management
- Act as the community manager for the Embassy’s official website and social media platforms (Twitter/X, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn).
- Regularly update and optimize the digital platforms to maintain an active and engaging online presence.
- Respond promptly to public inquiries and comments in a diplomatic and professional manner.
7. Press Statement Preparation
- Draft clear, concise, and accurate press statements for public distribution.
- Translate complex diplomatic information into accessible and engaging messages for media and the general public.
8. Journalist and Influencer Liaison
- Serve as the primary point of contact for local and international journalists seeking to engage with the Embassy.
- Establish and maintain strong working relationships with media professionals, bloggers, and social media influencers.
- Organize media briefings, interviews, and press tours to showcase the Embassy’s activities.
9. Support to Events and Official Visits
- Handle all communication-related aspects of the Ambassador’s visits and official social events.
- Prepare media kits, talking points, and visual materials to ensure high visibility and media coverage.
- Coordinate the production of videos and photo documentation during high-level functions.
Desired Profile
This role requires a combination of technical skills, diplomatic tact, and strong cultural awareness. The ideal candidate should possess:
- A proven track record in digital communication, preferably in an international or diplomatic environment.
- Advanced skills in using digital tools and content management systems.
- Proficiency in writing articles, social media posts, and formal press releases tailored to diverse audiences.
- Professional experience working with journalists, media houses, and digital influencers.
- An excellent grasp of online engagement trends, media landscape, and digital storytelling techniques.
- Knowledge of integrated communication approaches, including strategic planning, campaign execution, and media relations.
- A strong personal interest in public diplomacy, international affairs, and civil society development.
- A perfect command of English and Kiswahili. A working knowledge of French is highly desirable and would be considered a distinct advantage.
