Biovision Africa Trust (BvAT), a pioneering non-profit organization established in 2009 by the Biovision Foundation for Ecological Development in Switzerland, is offering an enriching internship opportunity for a passionate and competent individual with an IT background. Located at the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe), Duduville Campus, Kasarani, Nairobi, BvAT plays a significant role in promoting sustainable development in Africa by supporting agroecological transitions for smallholder farmers. Through a multi-sectoral and multi-level approach, the organization collaborates with governments, research institutions, civil society, and private sector actors to ensure ecological farming practices are adopted for the betterment of people and planet.

BvAT’s work is guided by a strong commitment to digital transformation, using innovative information technology tools to improve internal operations, external communications, and knowledge management. As part of this transformation journey, the organization seeks to recruit an ICT Intern to support software maintenance, website and cloud services, document design, and related IT functions.

About Biovision Africa Trust (BvAT)

BvAT coordinates various strategic programs and initiatives, including:

  • The Farmer Communication Programme (FCP)
  • The African Union’s Ecological Organic Agriculture (EOA) Initiative
  • The Knowledge Hub for Organic Agriculture and Agroecology in Eastern Africa (KHEA)
  • The Agroecology Promotion Programme (APP)
  • Several country-level and regional projects aimed at promoting agroecology and sustainability

To enhance the digital capacity of these programs, the ICT Intern will contribute to efficient IT support, improved user experience, and streamlined content delivery within the organization.

Objective of the Internship

This internship is offered under the Agroecology Promotion Programme (APP) and Porticus Project in Kenya. The main objective is to provide hands-on technical support in IT systems, Microsoft 365, Azure and cloud optimization, email and account management, website development and maintenance, and document/visual design. The intern will assist various departments in handling IT-related tasks, thus playing a critical role in boosting the organization’s digital effectiveness.

Internship Duration and Location

  • Duration: 12 months (renewable based on performance and organizational needs)
  • Location: BvAT Offices, ICIPE Duduville Campus, Kasarani, Nairobi, Kenya

Reporting Line

The intern will report directly to the Head of Programmes (EOA and KCOA) and will work closely with the Communications and Fundraising Team, IT personnel, and other cross-departmental teams.

Key Responsibilities and Scope of Work

The intern will provide support across several technical and digital functions, categorized as follows:

a) Software and IT Support

  • Assist in the installation, configuration, updating, and maintenance of various software applications used by BvAT staff.
  • Troubleshoot both hardware and software issues and provide timely support to ensure minimal downtime.
  • Maintain an updated record of software assets, licenses, and user access rights to ensure compliance.
  • Develop simple user manuals and guides to assist staff in using internal software tools effectively.

b) Cloud-Based Services Management

  • Provide administrative support for cloud platforms such as Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Dropbox, and SharePoint.
  • Assist in setting up new user accounts, managing user permissions, and troubleshooting login or access issues.
  • Organize and maintain shared folders and digital backups while ensuring a structured file system.
  • Train users on basic functionalities of cloud tools and encourage best practices in digital collaboration and file security.

c) Website and Digital Content Management

  • Assist in the development, revision, and maintenance of project-related and event-specific websites.
  • Conduct minor updates and troubleshooting tasks within content management systems (CMS), especially WordPress.
  • Monitor website performance using basic analytics tools to assess user interaction and recommend improvements.
  • Ensure all digital content is current, accurately represents ongoing programs, and aligns with organizational branding standards.

d) Document and Design Support

  • Format official documents including reports, policy briefs, and PowerPoint presentations to meet professional standards.
  • Create basic digital content such as social media graphics, posters, flyers, and event materials using tools like Canva or Adobe Illustrator.
  • Ensure visual consistency by adhering to BvAT’s branding guidelines and project-specific identity manuals.
  • Assist in preparing communication materials for public events, online campaigns, and internal use.

e) System Maintenance and Technical Infrastructure

  • Monitor and maintain the performance of organizational computer systems and networks to ensure seamless operations.
  • Perform regular security updates, backups, and antivirus scans.
  • Support the IT department in implementing system upgrades and ensuring data integrity.
  • Maintain hardware inventory and assist with basic troubleshooting and repairs.

f) Administrative and Technical Support

  • Offer support for virtual meetings, webinars, and online workshops by handling technical setups, platform configurations, and recordings.
  • Help organize and archive digital documents and folders in accordance with internal file management protocols.
  • Provide on-site or virtual support during training sessions and workshops that require digital tools.
  • Conduct internal mini-trainings to build the digital literacy of staff, particularly on new tools or updated systems.

Required Qualifications and Skills

To be considered for this opportunity, candidates must meet the following qualifications:

  • Recently completed a degree in IT, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a closely related discipline
  • Basic understanding and hands-on experience with cloud-based tools such as Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Dropbox, OneDrive, and SharePoint
  • Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), particularly WordPress
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel for documentation and formatting
  • Basic design skills using software like Canva, Adobe Photoshop, or Illustrator
  • Strong interpersonal skills, problem-solving ability, and capacity to work in a multidisciplinary environment
  • Keen attention to detail, proactive learning attitude, and ability to manage multiple tasks
