Overall Job Responsibility
Reporting to the Radiology Manager, the Radiosonographer (Locum) will be responsible for delivering effective, efficient, and high-quality diagnostic imaging services — specifically focusing on ultrasound and general radiography. The successful candidate will ensure timely reporting, patient safety, proper equipment maintenance, and compliance with all radiological safety standards and regulations.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
1. Diagnostic Imaging and Evaluation
- Receive, process, and perform initial evaluation of patients referred for imaging procedures.
- Conduct a wide range of diagnostic imaging tests, including general ultrasound and Doppler ultrasound examinations.
- Ensure that images captured are of high diagnostic quality to support accurate clinical decision-making.
2. Image Interpretation and Reporting
- Provide timely and accurate findings based on ultrasound examinations.
- Identify and report any critical results promptly to the attending physicians.
- Maintain logs and reports of all critical results according to departmental protocols and standard operating procedures.
3. Image and Report Management
- Archive diagnostic images in the Hospital’s Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) as per hospital policy.
- Retrieve and dispatch validated radiology reports to the respective clinicians in a timely and efficient manner.
- Maintain clear records for audit and quality control purposes.
4. Safety and Regulatory Compliance
- Uphold stringent radiation safety standards in line with national and international regulations.
- Promote radiation protection measures for patients, co-workers, and self during imaging procedures.
- Participate in continuous education and practice updates regarding radiological safety protocols.
5. Equipment Management and Maintenance
- Ensure that imaging equipment is well-maintained, calibrated, and functional.
- Report any faults or irregularities to the relevant technical support personnel promptly.
- Participate in scheduled preventive maintenance routines and calibration verification.
6. Documentation and Record-Keeping
- Accurately document all patient records, including imaging results, diagnostic impressions, and any notable observations during the procedure.
- Uphold strict confidentiality and professional ethics in managing patient records and medical data.
7. Interdepartmental Coordination
- Collaborate closely with medical officers, specialists, and nursing staff to ensure quality integrated care.
- Participate in departmental meetings, quality assurance programs, and performance evaluations.
- Contribute to the development and revision of protocols to enhance service delivery.
Minimum Requirements
- Higher National Diploma in Ultrasound from a recognized institution.
- Diploma in Medical Imaging Sciences or a Bachelor’s Degree in Radiography.
- At least two (2) years of experience in a similar role, preferably in a busy hospital environment.
- Current registration and license from the Kenya Nuclear Radiological Authority (KNRA).
- Active membership in a recognized professional body such as the Society of Radiography in Kenya (SORK).
- Excellent skills in conducting Doppler ultrasound and general radiographic procedures.
- Attention to detail with exceptional record-keeping capabilities.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining collaborative teamwork across departments.
