Africa Uncensored is an award-winning investigative journalism organization based in Nairobi, Kenya. We produce hard-hitting documentaries, in-depth reports, and visual storytelling that puts truth, justice, and accountability at the center of public discourse.
We’re looking for a skilled and creative Camera Operator / Videographer to help bring our stories to life, to use technical and production skills in filming informative and professional footage that captures the mood and the spirit of events, and to work with reporters to develop stories.
The ideal candidate is technically proficient, adaptable, and passionate about capturing compelling visuals in diverse and often challenging environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Film high-quality video for investigative documentaries, news features, interviews, and events
- Work closely with producers, reporters, and editors to plan and execute shoots
- Operate cameras, lighting, and audio equipment in field and studio settings
- Ensure proper framing, focus, exposure, and audio quality
- Assist in setting up and breaking down gear on location
- Maintain and care for all equipment assigned
- Travel locally and occasionally regionally for assignments
- Collaborate in post-production when needed (e.g., organizing footage, syncing audio)
Requirements
- Proven experience as a camera operator or videographer
- Proficiency with professional video cameras (e.g., Canon, Sony, Blackmagic, DSLR systems)
- Familiarity with lighting setups and audio recording gear
- A strong visual eye and attention to detail
- Ability to work under pressure and in unpredictable environments
- Strong understanding of journalistic ethics and sensitivity to filming in vulnerable contexts
- Basic knowledge of video editing is a plus (Adobe Premiere Pro preferred)
- Valid driver’s license is an added advantage
Qualifications
- Certification in Film and Television Production (CBQ)
- Training in BTS Audiovisual Production, Sound and Image Technology
- Certification in Communication, Media and Journalism or related courses is a plus
