Job Purpose

The Senior Tax Accountant will oversee and execute the organization’s tax compliance, reporting, and planning processes. This includes ensuring strict adherence to the requirements set out by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), monitoring regulatory changes, advising business units on tax implications, and working closely with tax consultants to mitigate risks and enhance tax efficiency. The role will also involve mentoring junior staff, including the Tax Accountant, and collaborating with other departments to foster a culture of compliance and fiscal prudence.

Main Responsibilities

The Senior Tax Accountant’s core responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Tax Filing and Compliance
    • Prepare, compute, and review all tax returns including VAT, Corporate Tax, Withholding VAT (WHVAT), and Withholding Tax (WHT).
    • Ensure timely and accurate submission of all tax filings in compliance with the prevailing tax legislation.
    • Monitor and track all deadlines for statutory returns, ensuring the organization remains compliant at all times.
  2. Stakeholder Engagement and Regulatory Liaison
    • Act as one of the primary contact points with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) for all tax-related engagements, audits, and dispute resolution.
    • Coordinate with regulatory agencies during tax audits, investigations, and assessments.
    • Respond to queries and clarifications from KRA and ensure swift resolution of issues.
  3. Record-Keeping and Documentation
    • Maintain accurate and organized documentation for all tax-related matters.
    • Ensure availability and accessibility of records during audits and statutory reviews.
    • Develop a structured digital and physical filing system for tax documentation across different business divisions.
  4. Advisory Services
    • Provide internal tax advisory services to business units and divisions.
    • Analyze and communicate the impact of new tax legislation or amendments on business operations.
    • Proactively offer solutions to emerging tax risks or compliance challenges within departments.
  5. External Consultant Management
    • Work closely with tax consultants and auditors on all compliance, audit, and advisory matters.
    • Facilitate external reviews and audits by ensuring all necessary documentation and responses are prepared.
    • Coordinate periodic review meetings with consultants to assess tax strategies and case status.
  6. Legislation Monitoring
    • Stay informed on emerging tax regulations and communicate relevant updates to internal teams.
    • Evaluate the business impact of changes in taxation laws or fiscal policies.
    • Prepare internal reports and executive summaries on legislative changes and recommendations.
  7. Internal Controls and Risk Mitigation
    • Support the development and implementation of robust internal controls over tax compliance.
    • Design and roll out standard operating procedures to ensure consistent tax treatment across the organization.
    • Identify and mitigate risks in tax filings and interpretations by working collaboratively with process owners.
  8. Transfer Pricing
    • Support the preparation and maintenance of transfer pricing documentation in compliance with both local and international requirements.
    • Ensure the timely compilation of Local and Master files in accordance with OECD guidelines and KRA standards.
    • Coordinate with group tax teams to ensure group-wide compliance and alignment.
  9. Training and Capacity Building
    • Lead training sessions for business units and corporate departments on tax policies and compliance requirements.
    • Mentor and support junior staff, including the Tax Accountant, in developing technical competence.
    • Promote a culture of tax awareness and compliance across the organization.
  10. Financial Reporting
  • Assist in monthly, quarterly, and annual tax provisioning and reporting activities.
  • Ensure accuracy and completeness of tax-related data in financial statements.
  • Collaborate with the Finance Department to reconcile tax ledgers and balance sheet accounts.
  1. Advance Tax Planning and Compliance Oversight
  • Review computations prepared by external tax advisors for various CFAO Mobility companies.
  • Ensure that all advance tax payments are made in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Monitor performance and compliance levels of different business units in relation to tax obligations.
  1. Monitoring and Case Management
  • Track ongoing tax-related matters, including active cases with KRA.
  • Coordinate internal and external meetings to assess the status of tax issues.
  • Ensure consistent follow-up and reporting on outstanding tax issues and resolutions.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

To effectively fulfill the responsibilities of the Senior Tax Accountant role, candidates should possess the following:

  • At least 8 years of experience in tax compliance and accounting, ideally within a multinational organization, a large local enterprise, or a reputable audit firm.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field.
  • A fully certified CPA (K), ACCA, or equivalent professional qualification.
  • A Post Graduate Diploma in Tax Administration will be an added advantage.
  • In-depth and up-to-date knowledge of Kenyan tax laws, KRA procedures, and tax audit processes.
  • Practical experience in transfer pricing, including preparation of Local and Master files.
  • Strong familiarity with accounting systems such as SAP or Oracle and proficiency in Microsoft Office tools.
  • Proven ability to handle multiple tax cases and navigate complex compliance challenges with regulators.
