A total of 150 Game Ranger positions are available for suitably qualified Kenyan citizens who are passionate about safeguarding the country’s rich biodiversity, protecting wildlife habitats, and supporting the country’s eco-tourism sector. Game Rangers play a critical role in ensuring the security and safety of wildlife and conservation areas. Position: Game Ranger
Number of Vacancies: 150 Posts
Monthly Salary Scale: KES 19,220 – KES 23,130

Rangers will be deployed to various field stations depending on conservation needs and national priorities.
Duties and Responsibilities
Successful candidates appointed as Game Rangers will be entrusted with a wide range of duties and responsibilities, including but not limited to:
- Maintaining the security of wildlife and preventing poaching: Game Rangers are the frontline defenders against poaching and illegal wildlife trade. Their core responsibility is to protect endangered and vulnerable species from poachers and other threats.
- Safeguarding tourists and performing various parade duties: Rangers will ensure the safety of both local and international tourists visiting protected areas, and will also represent their units during official events and parades.
- Undertaking sentry duties, manning report and inquiry offices: Game Rangers are required to keep watch at designated entry and exit points in protected areas, man reporting centers, and respond to public and internal inquiries as part of daily administrative and operational duties.
- Investigating wildlife-related crimes and preserving crime scenes: Rangers will be involved in conducting preliminary investigations and preserving scenes of wildlife crimes to aid in successful prosecution and evidence collection.
- Tracking and recovering illegal wildlife products: Rangers will work closely with enforcement agencies to detect, intercept, and recover illegally obtained wildlife products such as ivory, rhino horn, bushmeat, and exotic plants.
- Collecting intelligence and interrogating suspects: As part of their law enforcement duties, Rangers are expected to collect field intelligence and assist in interrogating suspects found engaging in illegal activities in protected zones.
- Compiling environmental and conservation crime statistics: Rangers will assist in gathering and documenting field data related to conservation crimes to help with planning, reporting, and enforcement actions.
- Compiling nominal rolls: The maintenance of nominal rolls for wildlife field officers, deployed rangers, and support staff is part of administrative responsibilities assigned to Rangers.
- Preparing nominal rolls and undertaking patrols and escort duties: Rangers are expected to lead or participate in field patrols, monitoring the movement of wildlife and identifying threats. They may also be assigned to escort duties during high-level visits or transfer of wildlife species.
- Participating in rescue operations: Game Rangers often respond to emergencies such as injured animals, trapped wildlife, human-wildlife conflicts, and natural disasters affecting conservation areas.
The responsibilities outlined above require high levels of discipline, vigilance, resilience, and integrity. Game Rangers operate in sometimes harsh and dangerous conditions, and as such, candidates must demonstrate a strong sense of duty and patriotism.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications in order to be considered for recruitment as Game Rangers:
- Academic Qualification: A minimum of KCSE Grade D- (Minus).
- Citizenship: Must be a Kenyan citizen with a valid National Identity Card.
- Criminal Record: Must have no criminal record. Background checks will be conducted as part of the vetting process.
- Certificate of Good Conduct: Applicants must present a valid Certificate of Good Conduct from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
- Physical and Mental Fitness: Candidates must be physically and mentally fit to endure rigorous paramilitary training and field deployment. This includes stamina for long-distance patrols, agility, and psychological endurance.
- Height Requirements:
- Men: At least 5 feet 4 inches tall
- Women: At least 5 feet 2 inches tall
- Vision and Hearing: Must have good hearing and clear vision with or without correctional aids.
- Computer Literacy: Candidates must be able to operate basic computer systems. Training will be provided for advanced field technologies used in patrol and data gathering.
- Pregnancy Clause for Female Candidates: Female applicants must not be pregnant at the time of recruitment or during the training period.
- Leadership and Integrity: All applicants must meet the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya, which emphasizes integrity, honesty, accountability, and ethical leadership. Applicants will be required to provide clearance from relevant bodies where applicable.

The recruitment of Game Rangers will take place between 8th and 18th September 2025 across various designated recruitment centers .

Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must meet the following basic requirements to be considered for recruitment:
- Hold a Bachelor’s degree in any of the following academic fields:
Wildlife Management, Environmental Management, Forestry, Tourism Management, Environmental Science, Botany and Zoology, Ecology, Counselling and Psychology, Animal Health, Criminology, Law, Risk and Disaster Management, Government and Public Administration, Human Resource Management, or any other equivalent qualification from a recognized institution. - Be a Kenyan citizen.
- Possess a valid Kenyan National Identification Card.
- Have no criminal record.
- Present a valid Certificate of Good Conduct.
- Be aged between 22 and 30 years (applicable for new recruits).
- Be at least 5 feet 4 inches tall for men, and 5 feet 2 inches tall for women.

- Be proficient in the use of computer applications.

Duties and Responsibilities
The successful applicants will be deployed to conservation areas, parks, reserves, and game sanctuaries and will be expected to perform a range of operational, investigative, supervisory, and administrative tasks. Key responsibilities include:
- Managing the crime section at assigned stations or outposts, including mapping high-conflict or poaching-prone areas.
- Recording, investigating, and forwarding wildlife crime cases to the police for prosecution.
- Maintaining the inventory of lost and found property within the protected areas.
- Providing mentorship and guidance to investigating officers and junior staff.
- Supervising communication infrastructure including signal and radio rooms.
- Overseeing the strategic deployment and supervision of field officers in their areas of operation.
- Liaising and coordinating with government security agencies and stakeholders on security matters.
- Ensuring the proper maintenance and documentation of government vehicles and other conservation assets.
- Maintaining accurate operational records and submitting timely reports and correspondence as required.
- Executing both personnel and administrative duties, including managing daily morning call-ups and evening briefing sessions for enforcement teams.
- Assisting members of the public, and participating in coordinating security raids, anti-poaching ambushes, and other special operations.
- Conducting orderly room proceedings and performing duties as the designated orderly officer.
- Collecting, analyzing, and managing intelligence information related to wildlife crime and threats to conservation.
- Maintaining custody of critical exhibits, records, and installations for investigative and operational use.
- Responding to distress calls from the field, conducting night patrols, and managing emergencies in assigned zones.
- Supporting other security service providers in the disposal of expired or surplus ammunition and ensuring weapons safety.
- Investigating crimes, apprehending offenders, and promoting community policing initiatives that foster public involvement in conservation.
- Conducting patrols and beats, and attending court sessions when necessary to provide witness statements or evidence in wildlife crime cases.
