Senior Registrar – Internal Medicine (2-Year Contract)

Reporting to the Director, Medical Services & Research, the Senior Registrar – Internal Medicine will be responsible for delivering specialized patient care through the management of both inpatient and outpatient cases. The role demands a balance of advanced clinical skills, patient-centered care, and mentorship, with a focus on achieving optimal outcomes in accordance with the hospital’s established protocols and patient care objectives.

Key Roles and Responsibilities
The Senior Registrar – Internal Medicine will perform a wide range of duties, including but not limited to:
- Patient Assessment and Treatment
- Conduct initial assessments of patients, ensuring timely diagnosis, treatment, stabilization, and referral according to the patient’s condition.
- Provide care in line with clinical guidelines to achieve the highest standards of patient safety and recovery.
- Clinical Procedures
- Perform both emergency and non-emergency procedures in consultation with a Specialist or Consultant.
- Apply advanced medical knowledge in managing acute and chronic conditions within the internal medicine specialty.
- Ward Rounds and Ongoing Patient Management
- Undertake daily ward rounds to assess and document the clinical progress of patients.
- Collaborate with Specialists or Consultants to adjust treatment plans as necessary.
- Mentorship and Knowledge Transfer
- Guide and mentor Medical Officers in performing clinical procedures, promoting skill enhancement and improved patient care delivery.
- Professional Development
- Participate in continuous medical education programs to maintain and enhance medical knowledge and technical skills within the specialty.
- Seek mentorship under senior specialists or consultants to meet specialist recognition requirements.
- Outpatient Care
- Attend and manage patient reviews during outpatient clinics when required, ensuring continuity of care across all service points.
- Research and Protocol Development
- Engage in research activities within the internal medicine specialty to contribute to the advancement of medical practice.
- Take part in the creation, review, and implementation of clinical protocols to improve patient management and service delivery.
- Ethical and Professional Standards
- Maintain the highest standards of patient confidentiality and adhere to the hospital’s code of conduct.
- Exhibit professionalism, integrity, and ethical judgment in all aspects of clinical work.
- Other Duties
- Carry out additional responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor to meet departmental and institutional objectives.
Education and Experience Requirements
Applicants for this role must possess the following:
- A Master of Medicine degree in the relevant area of specialization from a recognized institution.
- A Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degree from a recognized institution.
- Registration with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) and possession of a valid practicing license.
- Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).
- Certification in Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS).
- Certification in Advanced Life Support (LSO).
