The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships (ESKAS) Program for the Academic Year 2026–2027

The Ministry has received communication from the Embassy of Switzerland in Nairobi regarding the availability of scholarships offered by the Government of Switzerland for the 2026–2027 academic year. These awards, provided through the Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships (ESKAS) Program, are designed to support outstanding scholars and researchers from East Africa who wish to undertake advanced academic work in Switzerland.

The program is part of Switzerland’s commitment to promoting international exchange and research cooperation. Successful candidates will benefit from world-class research facilities, academic mentorship, and exposure to Switzerland’s renowned higher education system.

Scholarship Scope

The scholarships are exclusively intended for advanced studies and research programs at Swiss universities, universities of applied sciences, and other academic institutions recognized by the Swiss Government. The following categories are available:

  1. Research Fellowships
    • Intended for highly qualified postgraduate researchers from all academic fields.
    • Applicants must be planning to pursue research work in Switzerland for one academic year.
    • Research must be conducted under the supervision of a Swiss professor or academic mentor at a recognized institution.
    • The fellowship supports the advancement of academic expertise, the exchange of knowledge, and the strengthening of international academic networks.
  2. PhD Scholarships
    • Open to candidates who have completed a Master’s degree or equivalent qualification and who wish to pursue doctoral studies in Switzerland.
    • The scholarship is awarded for an initial period of one year and may be extended up to three years, subject to academic performance and progress.
    • Applicants must secure admission to a PhD program at a Swiss university and have a confirmed academic supervisor in Switzerland.
    • The program offers access to Switzerland’s high-caliber research environment, fostering academic innovation and collaboration.
  3. Postdoctoral Scholarships
    • Designed for researchers who have recently completed their doctoral studies and wish to carry out further academic research in Switzerland.
    • The scholarship duration is one year.
    • Applicants must have a research proposal and confirmation of supervision from a Swiss academic host institution.
    • This program aims to enhance postdoctoral researchers’ expertise, develop independent research skills, and establish long-term academic partnerships.

Eligibility and Restrictions

  • Scholarships are open to applicants from East African countries, with specific age requirements:
    • Maximum age of 35 years for research fellowships and PhD scholarships.
    • No age limit for postdoctoral studies.
  • The program does not support studies in Fine Arts.
  • Undergraduate and Master’s level programs are not covered by these scholarships for East African students.
