To continue strengthening its educational programs, Peace Corps Kenya is seeking a qualified and experienced professional to fill the position of Programming and Training Coordinator – Education (PTC-ED). This role is central to ensuring that Volunteers are well-prepared, supported, and effectively integrated into schools and communities. The position requires a highly motivated individual with proven experience in education, training, community engagement, and program coordination.
The position is based in Kisumu, Kenya, under the Programming and Training (P&T) Division. The PTC-ED will report directly to the Education Program Manager and will support both the STEM education program and initiatives for Education for the Deaf. This is a full-time contractual position, and the successful applicant must demonstrate the capacity to work independently while upholding high professional and ethical standards.
Remuneration and Benefits
The minimum base annual salary for this position is KES 2,478,361.00. This figure does not include additional benefits such as:
- A 13th month bonus
- 90% health insurance premium contribution
- Mandatory statutory contributions
The starting base annual salary may be increased, depending on documented salary history provided through an employer’s pay slip or official statement of pay. Annual performance-based increases may also be awarded, depending on satisfactory delivery of responsibilities.

Basic Overview of the Position
The Programming and Training Coordinator – Education will support the Peace Corps Kenya Education program in the Western Region. This includes oversight of activities related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education, as well as specialized work supporting Education for the Deaf initiatives.
The position’s responsibilities cover a broad spectrum, including:
- Supporting program development and implementation.
- Designing, delivering, and evaluating training programs for Peace Corps Volunteers and Trainees.
- Providing ongoing technical and professional support to Volunteers in the field.
- Assisting in project administration and budget oversight.
- Ensuring Volunteer safety and security through strict adherence to established Peace Corps standards and procedures.
This role requires significant travel within the country to provide direct technical and cultural support to Volunteers, monitor implementation progress, and strengthen partnerships with local institutions.
Detailed Duties and Responsibilities
Program Development and Support
The PTC-ED will work closely with the Education Program Manager to ensure program success through:
- Implementing training objectives aligned with the project’s logical framework, including teacher capacity building, literacy programs, skills development, teaching resource creation, and youth life-skills promotion.
- Establishing and maintaining partnerships with community-based organizations, schools, and education professionals to enhance program delivery.
- Developing, curating, and updating resource materials to guide Volunteers in their work.
- Conducting site visits to support Volunteer activities, provide mentorship, and ensure alignment with project objectives.
- Coordinating Project Advisory Committee (PAC) meetings to enhance program effectiveness.
- Supporting the selection and preparation of new and replacement Volunteer sites.
- Maintaining open communication among Peace Corps staff, Volunteers, host institutions, and counterparts.
Training
A key part of this role involves the planning and execution of training activities for Peace Corps Volunteers. Responsibilities include:
- Assisting with the development of pre-service, in-service, and mid-service training programs, ensuring that Volunteers gain the necessary technical and cultural competencies.
- Drafting a training continuum to match technical requirements and learning objectives.
- Preparing and monitoring training budgets and ensuring cost-effective delivery of activities.
- Leading as a STEM Education Technical Trainer during pre-service training (PST).
- Facilitating and coordinating training sessions for diverse groups, including Volunteers, staff, and external partners.
- Working with trainers and facilitators to revise and improve training sessions.
- Evaluating trainee performance during PST and providing structured feedback to guide site placement and service readiness.
- Coordinating guest facilitators and integrating resource volunteers into training sessions.
Volunteer Support
Providing continuous and effective support to Volunteers is critical. The PTC-ED will:
- Conduct site visits to address technical, cultural, and personal challenges faced by Volunteers.
- Meet with community stakeholders to resolve Volunteer-related issues and strengthen relationships.
- Complete and file site visit reports, documenting progress and follow-up actions.
- Support Volunteers with resources for grant writing, proposal development, and project execution.
- Provide guidance on Peace Corps policies and ensure Volunteer compliance, particularly on safety and security matters.
- Organize and facilitate Community Orientation Meetings to integrate Volunteers into their host communities.
- Maintain accurate Volunteer records and ensure timely reporting of activities.
- Support Volunteers in documenting their achievements through the Volunteer Reporting and Grants (VRG) platform.
Project Administration
The PTC-ED will also handle project-related administrative responsibilities, including:
- Completing financial and travel-related documentation for program activities.
- Serving as staff liaison for Volunteer committees and assigned projects.
- Maintaining program records and archives in compliance with agency policy.
- Providing backup coverage for other positions within the programming and training unit as required.
Safety and Security Support
The safety and well-being of Volunteers is paramount. The PTC-ED will:
- Ensure site development meets established safety and programmatic standards.
- Immediately report any Volunteer safety and security concerns to the Safety and Security Manager and Country Director.
- Monitor compliance with Peace Corps security protocols and policies.
- Participate in the design and implementation of the Emergency Action Plan (EAP).
- Support Volunteers in developing awareness of safety risks in their communities.
Other Duties
- Serve as backup to the Education Program Manager when necessary.
- Carry out other assignments as directed by the Country Director or Director of Programming and Training.
- Undertake temporary assignments to support Peace Corps Kenya operations during periods when there are limited or no Volunteers in the field.
- May serve as an occasional money handler for designated transactions, acting only as a courier or intermediary without procurement decision-making authority.
Level of Effort
- The role requires a standard 40-hour work week at the assigned post in Kisumu.
- Frequent travel, including overnight stays, will be required to support Volunteers and program activities.
- At times, the coordinator may be required to work outside normal office hours, including evenings and weekends, to fulfill critical program responsibilities.
Work Experience Requirements and Qualifications
To be considered for this position, applicants must be legally eligible to work in Kenya and must provide an application that demonstrates they meet the following minimum qualifications:
Education
- A Bachelor’s degree in Education, Science, or another closely related field.
Work Experience
- At least three years of progressively responsible experience in STEM education programs.
- Minimum of three years of experience in adult training and facilitation using adult learning methodologies.
- At least three years of experience working in cross-cultural environments, especially with international participants.
- A minimum of three years of experience in community development programs, preferably those involving volunteers.
- At least two years of experience designing and executing a training continuum.
- Proven fluency in both English and Kiswahili, with the ability to switch seamlessly between the two languages.
Preferred Qualifications
- A Master’s degree in a relevant field.
- Strong attention to detail and experience in creating streamlined processes.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and related office applications.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain professional networks with organizations and government officials.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and work effectively under tight deadlines.
- Experience supporting small grant programs.
- Familiarity with Kenyan Sign Language.
