The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is inviting applications for the position of Quantitative Field Interviewers to support the Kenya Young Adolescents Gender Norms Study. Currently, APHRC is leading the Kenya Young Adolescents Gender Norms Study. The study aims to generate and share strategic evidence on the gender norms influencing behavior, health, and socio-economic outcomes among young adolescents aged 10 to 14 years in Kenya. The evidence generated will contribute to shaping programs, policies, and interventions targeting adolescents and young people.
To support the successful execution of this project, APHRC is seeking experienced and qualified individuals to serve as Quantitative Field Interviewers. The role will involve field-based data collection scheduled to take place from November 2025 through January 2026. Applicants residing in the counties of Kilifi, Taita Taveta, Makueni, Tharaka Nithi, Kirinyaga, Nairobi, Garissa, Migori, Kisumu, Kericho, Vihiga, Narok, Uasin Gishu, and Turkana are strongly encouraged to apply.
This recruitment seeks to identify individuals who are not only capable of collecting high-quality data but also demonstrate professionalism, ethical conduct, and the ability to work collaboratively with the project’s stakeholders, including the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) and other team members.
Job Description – Quantitative Field Interviewers
The Quantitative Field Interviewers will play a critical role in ensuring the collection of accurate, reliable, and high-quality data that will serve as the backbone of the Kenya Young Adolescents Gender Norms Study. Successful candidates will be expected to undertake the following responsibilities and duties:
- Household Listing and Identification
- Work closely with KNBS officers to conduct household listing in pre-identified enumeration areas.
- Ensure accurate identification of eligible households based on the established study criteria.
- Maintain consistency and accuracy in documenting households for ease of follow-up during the interview stage.
- Informed Consent and Assent Procedures
- Approach study participants respectfully and obtain informed consent or assent prior to conducting interviews.
- Clearly explain the purpose of the study, participant rights, confidentiality measures, and the voluntary nature of participation.
- Ensure all consent and assent forms are properly documented and filed in line with ethical requirements.
- Conducting Interviews
- Administer structured interviews with respondents using SurveyCTO, the designated digital data collection tool.
- Ensure questions are asked in a neutral, non-judgmental manner and that responses are recorded accurately.
- Address any respondent concerns or queries appropriately during the interview process.
- Data Management and Recording
- Enter collected data directly into electronic devices, minimizing errors associated with paper-based systems.
- Review completed interviews for accuracy and completeness before final submission.
- Safeguard data confidentiality and ensure data security protocols are strictly followed.
- Collaboration and Teamwork
- Work effectively with the broader research team to ensure consistency in the fieldwork approach.
- Participate in daily team debriefings and provide feedback on field experiences, challenges, and successes.
- Cooperate with supervisors in resolving challenges encountered in the field.
- Other Assigned Duties
- Undertake additional responsibilities assigned by the supervisor to support the smooth implementation of the project.
- Adapt to changing field conditions and respond flexibly to logistical challenges.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants for the Quantitative Field Interviewer position are expected to meet the following minimum requirements:
- Possession of a KCSE certificate with a minimum grade of C.
- Demonstrated experience in quantitative data collection, particularly with electronic data capture tools.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and report-writing skills.
- Availability to work full-time for the entire duration of the study (November 2025 – January 2026).
- Residency in one of the target counties: Kirinyaga, Kilifi, Taita Taveta, Makueni, Tharaka Nithi, Nairobi, Garissa, Migori, Kisumu, Narok, Uasin Gishu, Turkana, Kericho, or Vihiga.
- Proficiency in both spoken and written English and Swahili. Familiarity with local languages spoken in the respective counties is an added advantage.
- Competency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word and Excel.
- Proven ability to work independently, prioritize tasks effectively, and function as part of a large research team.
