To support this work, AKU is seeking a highly skilled and reliable driver to join its operations in Isiolo County. This role is critical in ensuring that staff, partners, and materials are safely and efficiently transported to facilitate ongoing research and program activities.


Job Summary

The position of Driver (Isiolo) involves providing dependable, safe, and professional transportation services in support of AKU’s research study and fieldwork activities in Isiolo County. The driver will be responsible for transporting staff, partners, and supplies within the county and occasionally beyond. The successful candidate must have excellent knowledge of Isiolo and surrounding areas, demonstrate adherence to safety and traffic laws, and ensure the assigned vehicle is maintained in peak operating condition.


Responsibilities

The responsibilities associated with this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Transport staff, visitors, and partners to assigned destinations within Isiolo County and beyond, ensuring timely and safe arrivals.
  • Conduct regular vehicle inspections, including checks on fuel, oil, water, brakes, tires, and other essential components, to guarantee roadworthiness at all times.
  • Keep the assigned vehicle clean, orderly, and in good working condition, both inside and outside.
  • Maintain updated records of mileage, fuel consumption, service schedules, and any vehicle repairs undertaken.
  • Monitor and coordinate timely servicing, insurance renewals, and repairs of the assigned vehicle, reporting promptly to the supervisor when action is needed.
  • Comply strictly with Kenyan traffic regulations as well as AKU’s internal safety and operational policies.
  • Provide logistical support to the field team by transporting research supplies, documents, and equipment where necessary.
  • Exercise discretion and confidentiality when transporting staff, study participants, or sensitive documents.
  • Report any accidents, incidents, or mechanical faults immediately to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Be available to work flexible schedules, including irregular hours and extended field trips, as required by project needs.
  • Perform other assigned duties that align with the role of supporting program logistics and fieldwork operations.

Requirements

Applicants for this position must meet the following requirements:

  • KCSE Certificate or equivalent academic qualification.
  • Valid BCE driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • A valid Certificate of Good Conduct.

Relevant Experience

Candidates must demonstrate the following relevant experience to be considered:

  • Solid understanding of basic vehicle mechanics to handle minor troubleshooting on the road.
  • Proficiency in local language to facilitate communication with local communities.
  • Familiarity with Isiolo town and its surrounding areas, ensuring efficient navigation and route planning.

In addition to technical skills and experience, the role requires the following personal attributes:

  • Excellent driving skills combined with punctuality and reliability.
