Position Summary
The Dean of the School of Health Sciences (Nursing) will be employed as a teaching staff member on permanent and pensionable terms, while also holding the position of Dean on a three-year renewable contract. Reporting directly to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Research, and Student Affairs (DVC – ARS), the Dean will be responsible for providing leadership, direction, and management for the Nursing department. The role involves overseeing all academic and administrative functions within the school, ensuring the highest standards of teaching and research, and working closely with faculty, staff, and students to ensure the continued success and growth of the department.

Key Responsibilities
As Dean of the School of Health Sciences (Nursing), the successful candidate will be responsible for a variety of tasks across both academic leadership and administrative functions. These include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Academic Leadership and Teaching Oversight
- Oversee all teaching and examination processes within the School of Nursing, ensuring timely and comprehensive course coverage and evaluation.
- Monitor the academic progress of students and ensure effective teaching methodologies are employed by faculty members.
- Ensure the school adheres to university academic policies and external regulatory requirements related to nursing education.
- Manage the development and review of academic programs, including curriculum design and assessment methods, in collaboration with faculty and relevant departments.
- Student Management and Support
- Monitor student attendance and performance, ensuring that issues of retention, progression, and graduation are addressed effectively.
- Work closely with the university’s student support services to ensure students receive the guidance and resources they need for academic success.
- Oversee students’ projects, attachments, and other forms of industry exposure, ensuring they meet the university’s academic standards and provide students with practical learning opportunities.
- Resolve student concerns in a timely manner, acting as a liaison between students and the administration when necessary.
- People Management and Faculty Development
- Manage faculty and staff performance, including overseeing workload allocation, leave management, and discipline.
- Work with the Human Resources department to ensure optimal staffing levels and manage faculty resources effectively.
- Lead professional development activities for staff to enhance teaching quality, research output, and professional practice.
- Foster a collaborative and supportive working environment within the school, promoting teamwork, respect, and continuous improvement.
- Research and Industry Collaboration
- Promote and oversee research activities within the department, encouraging faculty and students to engage in research that contributes to the advancement of nursing practice and healthcare.
- Ensure the school’s research output aligns with the university’s strategic goals and engages with both national and international research networks.
- Contribute to the publication of research findings, including refereed journal articles, and facilitate faculty participation in academic conferences, seminars, and workshops.
- Administrative and Strategic Oversight
- Oversee the administration of the School of Nursing, ensuring that all operations run smoothly and efficiently.
- Ensure effective communication between the school, the broader university community, and external stakeholders, including regulatory bodies and industry partners.

- Admissions and Orientation
- Participate in the approval and admission of new students to the Nursing program, ensuring that high standards are maintained in the recruitment process.
- Lead the orientation and induction process for new students, ensuring they are properly integrated into the academic and social life of the university.

Person Specification
The ideal candidate for the role of Dean – School of Health Sciences (Nursing) should possess the following qualifications and experience:
- Academic Qualifications
- A PhD in Medical-Surgical Nursing, General Nursing, Critical Care, Pediatric Nursing, Community Health, Public Health, or an equivalent qualification from an accredited university.
- A Master of Science in a relevant nursing field, such as Medical-Surgical Nursing, General Nursing, Critical Care, Pediatric Nursing, Community Health, or Public Health from an accredited university.
- A Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited university.
- Experience
- A minimum of three years of teaching/research experience at the university level, with at least one year of management experience in an academic setting.
- Evidence of publications, including refereed journal articles, in relevant areas of nursing.
- Experience in academic leadership and administration in a university or similar educational institution.
- Knowledge of industry standards in nursing education and practice, as well as relevant regulatory frameworks.
- A valid practicing licence from the Nursing Council of Kenya is required.
