Duties and Responsibilities

The role of Assistant Public Health Officer III is critical in supporting the County Health Department in promoting environmental health, preventing disease, and ensuring the overall well-being of communities. The successful candidates will be expected to undertake the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Community Mobilization and Sensitization: Mobilize, sensitize, and advise communities on matters related to environmental health to create awareness and encourage preventive health practices.
  • Referrals to Health Facilities: Identify and refer health cases to appropriate health facilities for specialized care and intervention.
  • Immunization Programs: Participate in carrying out immunization activities to ensure the prevention of vaccine-preventable diseases at the community level.
  • Environmental Health Assessments: Identify key environmental health issues within the community and provide timely interventions.
  • Community Health Days: Organize and facilitate community health days to advise communities on common public health issues, including sanitation, hygiene, and preventive health measures.
  • Record Keeping: Collect and maintain up-to-date records of services rendered to ensure proper documentation, monitoring, and evaluation of health programs.
  • Community Health Needs Assessment: Conduct assessments to determine the health needs of communities and recommend appropriate interventions.
  • Vector, Vermin, and Rodent Control: Implement effective measures for controlling vectors, vermin, and rodents to reduce the spread of communicable diseases.
  • Mosquito Control Strategies: Participate in implementing integrated mosquito control strategies, especially in malaria-prone areas.
  • Public Health Infrastructure: Provide guidance on the appropriate siting of homesteads, pit latrines, grain stores, trading centers, and emergency camps to promote safe and healthy living environments.
  • Sanitation and Hygiene Standards: Implement sanitation and hygiene standards within communities to ensure compliance with public health regulations.
  • Facility and Waste Management Inspections: Undertake inspection for preventive maintenance at health facilities, ensuring proper sanitation, hospital hygiene, and healthcare waste management practices.
  • Other Duties: Perform any other relevant duties and responsibilities within the County Health Department as assigned.

Requirements for Appointment

To qualify for appointment to this position, an applicant must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Must be a Kenyan citizen.
  • Must have a Diploma in Environmental Health Sciences from a recognized institution.
  • Must have valid registration with the Public Health Officers and Technicians Council (PHOTC).
  • Must possess a valid practicing license issued by the relevant regulatory authority.
  • Must have a certificate in computer application skills from a recognized institution.
